They weren't quite soccer-ball sized. I'd say a good 6-7 inches in diameter.
Yes... pain is one of those universal languages... especially secret-no-no pain. All men understand that.

ok it isn't a kusarigama it is a kusarikama Although if you really want to learn chain techniques i would go with a kusari fundo or a 9 link chain Hope it helps.

I wasn't nor am I now really interested, it was just a fun looking thing to try out. I don't like weapons with chains as I'm not a fan of having to lose control of my weapon... control that MUST be given up to use chain weapons...

hmm, i guess it depends how you look at it i see it as taking more control rather than losing it, i personally like chain weapons especially if i know that i can use it really well. Kusarigama for example is all about control, you use the weighted chain to stun your opponent or lock up his weapon and then you attack with the kama which if done properly and quick enough can be devestatingly effective. You have to be very very precise with your control or chances are you are dead.

Ah. Nice. Once we grade to black belt in Kobudo (Serious Student martial status) We may begin using weighted chains - along with war fans, live blades and sharpened kama in sparring.

Tajima, this is a kusarigama. It is one of the weapons of the Shinto muso ryu curriculum of which I study. The benefit being, you can tie up your assailant, stab or slash them, all with the one weapon. Very nasty looking, very effective, very hard to get out of or away from. Here is a Wiki-link, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusarigama Isshin-ryu kusarigamajutsu, is what is taught in my dojo - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isshin-ryu_kusarigamajutsu

Kusarigama are one of the most psychologically damaging weapons i can think of. Here you have a weapon that is a scythe and alot of people fear the scythe as it is a symbol of death, and then you have the spinning chain (some chains are designed to howl not hum) which lashes out like a snakes tongue to foul your weapon or foul your limbs or throat for the killing blow.
Damn chop chop you get to do a martial art i would love to do, i wish there was more choice over here. Where in aus are you chop?

grounded: i think that is just a story, the reason i say this is because you can use the chain in a short length or a longer length, not only that you can use the kusarigama without needing to swing the chain round your head. There is one aikido/iaido class around here but i haven't had a chance yet to inspect it.

Hey ChopChop, It has always been my experience that I (and a lot of others) have always learned a lot more from someone who is a "serious student of the subject" than from any master or self-proclaimed expert in any field. The fact that you describe yourself as a student who knows there is so much to learn indicates to me that you really have a lot to teach too. Please don't sell your teaching value short. I will bet you a pint that we can all learn some valuable things from your swordsmanship info. Had a bit of a stuff up with transferring some files from my works PC, but fingers crossed should be able to post a little something tonite or tommorrow if all goes to plan. Few more photos to do yet ! Thanx for believing in me people.

thought it might be interesting to note that my best friend just got his Nidan in Toyama Ryu. He and his sensei(godan) are now officially my teachers! If all goes well i'll have my Shodan in a couple years when they next host their 7th and 8th dan Shihan from japan. Interesting note, Shiomi Sensei, Godan is the current head of Toyama Ryu USA dojo. Thomas Carrillo, my best friend of over 11 years is currently his 'second in command' so to speak. Toyama Ryu is just getting started here in the US. You can get more info. here: www.toyamaryuusa.comHey, Adam you may be interested to know I'm taking Toyama ryu up in the Bay Area.
