I was wondering how healthy it would be for a sword (the Koga Ninja sword if that matters) to leave it "outdoors" almost year round. And by outdoors, I mean in my car actually. Say I had a job where I was able to use my sword as a type of cutting tool, so I'd want to keep it in my car for my convenience. I live in MA so it can get rather cold in the car during the winter, and rather hot in the summer. Would those types of temperatures be harmful to the sword or mess with the metal it's made of? I haven't been able to find anything on this matter. Thanks.

I would be more concerned about the wood, or more precisely the wood expanding and contracting.

I doubt it would get hot enough or cold enough in MA to mess with the temper or durability of your sword. I'd be more concerned with humidity - depending on how much the humidity varies in your area. If it gets really humid you could end up with moisture on your blade and thus rust. That's easy enough to combat but it'll be a constant battle. Then the other issue is the humidity could end up swelling your saya and tsuka. This could cause the tsuka to crack or cause your saya to become too tight around your habaki. As a result your saya could crack when you resheathe your sword.
Other than that it shouldn't be a problem.
To combat moisture and rust I suggest frequent treatments of Militec-1. As for the effects of humidity on your wood I have no idea really
EDIT: SoS beat me to it.

I want to know what job you have where you get to use a sword!?!?!
(Granted this is coming from a professional fencing instructor, but still!)

Mine, too. Sounds like my kind of job.

My guess is some kind of outdoor, tree cutting or brush clearing kind of job. I honestly wouldn't use a sword for something along those lines though, a machete is more than enough (and cheap too). It's his money though... the Koga Ninja looks robust enough that I'm sure it'd do fine.

Maybe he works at a recycling factory and chops up the plastic bottles. I would also be more concerned with your scabbard the humidity has made mine next to useless I think my hand and a half would fit better than my katana now.

Yea, other than a sword arts instructor, what job lets you use your sword at work?

i left a musashi katana in my car over night on a particularly humid night and by morning it was rusted and deeply pitted beyond that which rough grit sandpaper could polish out.

Jeez where do you live and are you sure the sword wasn't already moist with something else on it already?

Saito's real name is Nemo. He lives in a constantly oxygenated salt water tank.

I'd be more worried about what would happen if the police pulled me over with a sword in my car. they may not quite believe the explanation that I have it for "cutting things at work".

It shouldnt be a problem if its sheathed and in a sword bag or case of some type (that of course is depending on what country you live in)

i live in ohio, but on that particular summer night it was about 98* and the humidity was thick enough to cut with said sword. and i wouldnt worry about the cops, put it in a sword bag and stash it in your trunk, unless youve really screwed up they cant search your trunk anyway, and if they found it , it wouldnt mater. in AMERICA. i cant speak for other countries of which i know nothing about
EDIT: California and New York are known to have stupid ridiculous laws of which have no logical basis, so i also exclude them from the AMERICA statement. If you live in NY or CA you should probally research it properly.
