why not "sell" little tags for your profile? it could be set price or it could be a range of prices but it would get paypal off Paul's back if he was actually selling something would it not? even if it was only a digital thing. or if that is no good due to digital item scam fears (I know an on line collectible card game that people sell thousands of cards for on EBay every day) the other option is to offer people upgraded memberships. thus it wouldn't be a donation, you would be buying a membership. al Paul would have to do is set up a little side forum for contributing members and viola there's something that proves hesold something.
I'm all for it if they want an excuse then let's give them an excuse. TTA is in.

Wow what a difference a few word here and there can make.
ANYWAY i was simply stating i MYSELF have been screwed by paypal so of course my opinion is biased. I was simply doing what forums are here for... Voicing MY opinion.
Im a bit sad that this is a thread about helping SBG and its turned into a semprini fest....

sounds like a good idea, maybe the upgraded memberships could have a yearly subscription fee ,and have added features ,more smiley's perhaps, the forum's couild still be free to those wishing not to subscribe,i dont know how hard this would be to incorporate, but i think an upgraded membership would have a lot of people signing up for it

Late to the party as usual... heh. I can't donate anything at the moment, things are a bit tight around here... but I can offer my services should you need anything at all, Paul! Don't be afraid to ask or worry about compensation or anything for the time being, just ask and consider it done! I am at your disposal.

I've never been in favor of this kind of tagging or membership upgrades. Every forum I've been on that did this quickly ended up with a clique of "elites" that had contributed versus those that hadn't. It would have been fine but people began ignoring information posted by people that hadn't donated because they weren't "upgraded". Sometimes it would go further and people were told to in essence to "shut up" because they weren't contributing members. Not saying it would happen here but it can if people aren't careful.
Also, generally I contribute to forums I am on, but I prefer not to let people know that I did or how much I did. To me it is a private matter and I am not looking for praise or other perks for donating. Not saying that is what people are seeking but it can across that way if sites aren't careful.

i never thought of that :? ,maybe just a donations slot, with no upgrades may be best then, one of the good thing's about the forum is everyone's welcome and there is a distinct lack of elitism in this forum compared to some,i still think donation's are the way to go,but 14thforsaken does have a valid point

the donation status does not have to be publicly displayed, I'm just trying to come up with an idea that will clear the legal check-point. it could be completely invisible to the public forum who is an upgraded member and who is not.

i cant see any problem's with that tom,and it would get round any possible problem's of eletism rearing its head,i dont think this forum would get to that stage, but that would make sure it cant, yeah, that would work

Sorry guys, I literally haven't had time to check in on this thread (on the two occasions I tried, the forum was down!) and am saddened to see Nathan getting publicly attacked here for offering some helpful advice (what he says is 100% true, as I will explain in a second). Anyway, just a quick update - after days on end of calling, emailing paypal, getting hold of obscure documents to prove my identify and location, etc it has been resolved and my account was restored (though it did count down to 'd day' which, considering the kind of horror stories circulating on the net about how paypal freezes accounts, etc made me EXTREMELY nervous) - but the end result is - account restored and lesson learned - raffles of any time are strictly prohibited by paypal (though straight out donations are not), so this was the last '50/50' split we will be holding. In their own words: A recent review of your account indicates that you may be in violation of PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy regarding your sales of raffle ticketson www.sword-buyers-guide.com/SBG-Fundraiser.html. As such, we would like to remind you of our policy, which prohibits the use of PayPal to send or receive payments for activities that involve gambling and/or gaming activities, including but not limited to casino games, sports betting, horse or greyhound racing, lottery tickets, certain games of skill, and other ventures that facilitate gambling. The complete Acceptable Use Policy can be found at the following URL: www.paypal.com/au/cgi-bin/websc ... me-outside To learn more about the Acceptable Use Policy, please refer to our Help Center page here:https://www.paypal.com/au/cgi-bin/helpweb?cmd=_help Anyway, I'm sorry for promoting this without reading the fine print - I'll make another proper update on this shortly but just wanted to pop in quickly to let you all know where we are up to. Thanks for bearing with me, the real irony is that a campaign designed to try and save SBG darned near delivered the coup de grace..! But while SBG is a bit battered and brusied, its armor dinged up and its sword with a few sizeable chips in it (and an arm off, but its just a flesh wound) we'll make it through this I am sure.

Glad you got it straightened out, but I'm sad no more 50/50 raffles Thanks for the update!

Paul, do you still get to keep the 50/50 money or does paypal take that, as its a breach in their terms?? I hope you can keep it all...

Sorry for lack of replies here, on top of everything else lost internet for a couple of days here (I'm starting to think Mr Murphy has it in for me!! lol) - but no, paypal did not take the money so we will continue with the draw of what donations were entered on the 20th as originally planned - though of course, will not be accepting any further tickets or repeating the draw.
Once the smoke has cleared I will find some better ways to raise money for the site - so lesson learned I guess..

Well, the bright side is that you can still accept donations. Just let us know when the donate link is available again

Did everyone gloss over this statement amid the hubbub? The above is what makes this a community, not just a place to go.
The example presented is one that we should all strive to perpetuate.
