The point I was talking about disagreeing with Greg was just power in the swing. Aside from that I'm actually in agreement with him regarding most things relating to cutting. Like I said, he's a damned good cutter.
Let's see the a video though - that'll be best for critique.
Oh about the wak and practice sharpening - if you can afford it go for it! Get a few of'em really. Its going to take more than one sword to get good at polishing.

I have the EXACT same sword. Mine cuts through paper too and when i had my first go (atm im 100% un-formally trained, self taught) i had perfect clean cuts. I also cut straight through the thick bottle cap on one (my bad my aim is terrible) It sorta cracked as the plastic is thick there (only wish id kept the bottle end to show you the clean cut) I only had a go to see if i could and now my bottle collection waits until ive started at the Iaido Dojo up the road. I would say from this, chances are its NOT your blade, unless of couse its alot blunter than mine...?

While it will cut plastic just fine, I have also cut my share of caps as well thats cap bottle neck and all. Just dont go after wood dowels or you'll roll the edge. Dont get me wrong it still cut the dowel just rolled the edge too(poor form). Mine did not come with a perfect edge like yours I had to put it there, altho it had a good start already.(did not have to do mutch)

It should only need a light sharpening and hone or just a hone with a strop.

Yeah, I'll echo what Bleach said. Just about ALL Japanese style blades come with very good edges on them. Even the lowest end ones that start around $50. So if I were you, I'd start looking on youtube "how to strop a blade" Lemme see if I can find a fellow sword enthusiast... Here he shows you how to use nothing more then a piece of leather to keep your edge honed. Edit: BUT, if you have 40 bucks to spare, I'd highly recommend buying the belt sander and a stropping belt that TomK posted. I've had mine for almost 2 years now and it's still working strong. Here's TomK's method: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/sharpen-a-sword.htmlScroll down till you see the belt sander.

Just remember, it's not hard to ruin the sword with sandpaper or an Accusharp, but it's extremely easy to do it with a belt sander. If you go that route, remember , go slow and check your work constantly.
