I have had great success on multiple occasions using a large bonfire for the forging and heat treat. A pile of charcoal briquettes in the fire is very beneficial. Let it all get red-hot. (actually, I have even used the fireplace in my home for heat-treating)
I have heard of people using old Barbecues or halved 50-gallon drums and charcoal briquettes. I think that this would make a fine forge, as long as there is enough airflow. You can get airflow by using a shop-vac on "blower" mode, billows, or maybe that jet-heater of your grandfathers.
Add enough heat and air to anything, and it will burn.
