I live in the EU, namely Portugal. I'd like to get some customs from Chinese forges, or buy some swords straight from USA. I've heard of Access USA, but does anyone have any experience with them, and is there a similar service for China? I don't mind paying taxes (I don't like it either), but is there anyway of getting stuff in through countries in the EU that have lower taxes? (Ours are only gonna go up from now on...) I've had the good fortune of having good friends help me, but I feel bad about asking for help all the time. Looking for alternatives here...

You're SOL buddy. If you could have someone could ship the swords to you unmounted (blade only first then furniture later) and label it as a machine part you might be able to bypass the taxes... but of course there might be legality issues with that.
There's also the idea of having someone bring the sword into the country via luggage - especially if they're coming from the USA. That of course is also a legal issue as that does constitute smuggling to a certain degree. Could land your friend in jail for that.
In other words unless you're willing to risk the consequences and your comrads helping you are willing to do the same you'd be best getting them the good ole fashioned way - have'em mailed to you and pay the taxes/fees etc. necessary.
Of course there IS always the option of moving out of the country...

I don't mean to do anything illegal, no matter how I may feel about any particular laws and I'd never put my friends through any legal issues. Its really more of a tax issue. Our taxes are gonna go up to 25% any day now, and we can expect more taxes on imported items. (My country is sinking at the moment...)
Its just annoying to pay more 50, 100 or even 300€ just because I live in the wrong country, and believe me Sam, I'd move out in a heartbeat if I could.
I wonder if there is way of selecting where the item enters the EU, so I could pay the local taxes?

Hi Godslayer-I am the new owner of Wiwingtiswordsupply-we ship world wide. However what you are speaking of is technically illegal-there is no problem shipping something to a differant address other than the customers. What you do with it after that can be sticky for you and your friends-you need to find out the import/export laws of the countries around you that you could use-where your friends are.In some cases objects used for offices or personal gifts are tax excempt or in a lower bracket. However be aware that to deliberately avoid paying duties/taxes on any article imported is heavily frowned upon and taken very seriously by the ruling government/and the penalties can be severe to say the least.

Thanks for the input deejay. Just let me say that if I ever lived in Canada, I'd get everything from your shop! About legality... The EU is a one currency (well it'll be one soon enough... ), free trade federation. Although it IS against the "spirit of the law" to have something shipped to a EU member state with lower taxes and then ship it into another EU country, therefore evading higher taxes, it is not illegal. (at least this is what I get from my father who is a customs officer). Different member states have different tax policies, therefore it is quite possible to get good deals IF you happen to live in one of the countries with lower taxes and friendlier import policies. I think you guys misunderstood me in the OP. My friends live, or have lived in other EU countries. They did nothing unlawful, nor would I ever ask that out of anyone. Its just that I can't keep on asking for favors all the time...
