I looked at BABA's education page, and there were lots of weird and wonderful courses there. Quite a few of them were at Bridgewater college, a sort of polytechnic near where I live. Sadly, all of their courses that involve traditional blacksmithing also involve glass blowing for some reason. And I don't really want to do that. At all. I'm going to have a word with the most local blacksmith I know of. A chap called Bob Hobbs. He makes ornamental ironwork, so that's a great idea of yours. I'll keep an eye on BABA though. Also, on IforgeIron, the chap who taught our course (John) PMd me and said that there is a bloke in Weston Super Mare who may help me. These are my plans, anyway. I'll wait til after Christmas though, before I start hassling people.

Dude, Glassblowing rocks! Even if you never do it again it is fun and you can learn a great deal from the course. I once did a rapier pierced work cup hilt, polished it up and blew glass into the cup from the inside. Totally cool glass-hilted rapier and tough as hell Recommendation: reconsider.

Somewhere, but that was over 20 years ago so I'm not holding out hope of finding them. Maybe I'll make another; a friend of mine blows glass for a living so I have access to the equipment.

That would be really cool!
It sounds like a pretty unique idea. What made you think of doing it like that?

I saw a similar hilt in a museum catalog and decided to give it a shot. Apparently they were all the rage in Italy during the renaissance.

Check these links out:
They show a (completely mad beirdy bloke) using much of the same techniques I learned on that course of mine. The last one I didnt do, but shows him playing around with forge welding.

Have you seen it before?
He's completely mad! In a good way. I'm completely gonna copy that hook when I get my forge up and running. I like the idea of finishing with beeswax. We used sunflower oil, and despite making the shop smell like a fish and chip joint, didnt work too well.
