Oh, I am a sucker for nice, large folders. I just ordered on of these on a whim before I seen this post here. It should arrive at the APO in a week or so, I will let everyone know what I think of it once it arrives. Here is the pic that sold me on it:

Thanks for the pics people, I am an happy man now. Man, that blade look as large as that entire closed Spyderco folder, and the whole thing dwarfs that poor coca-cola bottle

Here's more knife po@n. If you look at Mike's pic, they really are nearly as big as a kabar. This is my usmc 1217. edit: I'm not gonna do a review - so many online and they are all pretty much what I would have to say; I'll add more pics though. Only thing I would gripe about is the blade has a tendency to rust - gotta oil it and the grivory grip edges need to be sanded down a slight bit (burrs from the factory). steel liners- in one of the threads online, Demco tells us that the Spartan fails at 425-ish lbs. Still, very impressive. Thumb stud/plate can be removed. They placed a striped "grippy" section for where your thumb might be on the spine. It is fast. The overall PoB is right at your index finger for the standard grip. Closing this knife is verrry slow/tough though. I'm able to finally close it on my first tries today (was taking 3rd tries yesterday). Also the Emerson-style release is not as tough on the pockets as I thought. Able to do it 100% of the time now. Yesterday my success rate was 1/5 tries. You can hook the stud pretty bad if you press against your pocket too hard.

Very nice pics Ghost, thanks for posting 'em here. Seems like the perfect blade for a ''that's not a 'noife, that's a 'noife!'' moment.

I wanted to try and make a kydex sheath for it - wonder if the grivory will deform though from the heat like the kydex will.
- OH yea Seb. When it "snaps" open it really SNAPS. You can definitely hear this baby coming out and it is pretty intimidating.

Actually Seb, if you count the centimeter where it's not sharpened as part of the blade, the blade is bigger than the closed Spyderco. It's a beast of a blade. And what ghost said is completely true, it locks open LOUD. That coupled with the quick deployment would send a mentally stable attacker running with his tail in between his legs.

Ghost, do you REALLY carry this CS Spartan? Ok, show of hands. Who carries a big (>4") folding knife daily? Spartan, Rajah, whatever.

Nope larry, I haven't. Since i've been studying on campus a lot...knives are outta the question. (especially since a disturbed student last year cut a girl's throat...I was studying in the library a floor above when it happened) EDC I've been toting around a seber This thing is nearly as heavy as the spartan (7oz vs. 8 oz) and built tougher - if that is even possible. Got a CRKT M16-01Z..but it feels too light.

*Raises hand*
I trade off both. Don't expect to use that pocket for anything else, because, they are total pocket pigs.

well, I sometimes (damn regulations )carry spyderco military and spyderco resilience. first is exactly 4" blade, and the second is a tad longer - 4.25" IIRC... both are pretty comfortable to carry, especially the military.... hell, I knew someone who carried the cold steel ti-lite 6" folder

Weird. I own a CS Ti-Lite 6''. It is quite light for its size, but is also quite bulky IMHO ...

Forgot about this thread.
That's an interesting knife, my biggest question: How do you find that grip? It looks like it'd be good and snug (albeit big enough, eh?) in a standard cutting grip, but I'm not sure how much trouble I'd have getting used to it.
Not much on Cold Steel's big folders, though I've always been a fan of big knives with big bellies...just these knives really don't do much for me, somehow.
As to the earlier question of actually carrying big folders, well...one of my newest knives sneaks in right at 4" (blade length, but it sits in my pocket just dandy. I also have a er...folding bowie knife...thing...with a 6-7" blade, that actually has a sheath to carry it like a fixed blade, which I used to do often, but the knife is actually very comfortable in my pocket, too. Probably because it's still quite thin, despite being so long.
Which brings us to the "biggest" thing about big folders: it's not always a matter of length...but girth. ...No phallic jokes, guys, please.

Yeah, some body shapes are more ''large folder carrying'' friendly. Beeing a slim 6'4'' 160 lbs guy, I know my shape doesn't easily allow me carrying anything very large

I carry it around the house, it's better at everyday tasks than you'd think. Haven't taken it out on a walk through town or anything yet. The grip is amazing. This thing will never come out of your hand. The wave feature is really impressive.

How do you rate it against the various gripping styles? Reverse, icepick, etc.? Does it allow sufficiently for more delicate grips like peeling or slicing vegetables/fruits/the like? Or is this pretty much stuck on the one big cut?

Reverse is very comfy, almost no difference between normal grip. I haven't tried to peel anything with it as I have had doubts it could do so and I was hungry when I thought about it  I sliced a papaya into neat, even slices with the Spartan. It worked like a kitchen knife. If your hands are smaller, it would allow more gripping options (for example, choking up a little or keeping your hand at the bottom of the handle), but if you have large, chubby hands it would fit you perfectly, but you would be a bit more restricted. It is oriented to larger cuts, but like I said, I've used it for a lot of household chores in the 2 weeks I've had it. Hope that helps
