Awesome. I may have to do that. No time soon, I'm afraid, but let me know if you start developing a waiting list.

You've made quite a few already though, havnt you?
I'd quite like to see some other examples of your work, if you get the chance.

Yes, I have made about a dozen in spare time over the last couple years. A few cracked during quenching; and most of the good ones, I have given away to friends and relatives. Here is a thread on the folded one that I have kept for myself: /index.cgi?board=swordmaking&action=display&thread=1191736552 Same knife (left), plus two that I gave away: Actually I just dug up a few others: The knife I am currently working on is my first big tanto meant for "traditional" fitting. (i.e. habaki, mekugi-ana, flat-bevel etc.) I will definitely be doing more like it.

Yes, I would love to try a kat if I ever get a big enough forge, and enough time.

Very cool tanto! It was also interesting to learn that the characters for sensei are Chinese for mister.

Thats a pretty neat cutter. How exactly did you sharpen it, after the heat treat?
Another thing I was wondering, those damascus type blades you made, did you do the forge welding yourself for that, or did you buy premade pattern welded stock?

I sharpened it by first shaping it with a belt sander, then using finer and finer sandpaper in a hybrid polish/sharpen.
And yes, I forge welded/folded that one myself, hence the kinda low layer count. I tried using both a coffee-can forge and a really hot fire. Quite cumbersome to do that way.

Where did you learn to do that, or did you just experiment? It must have been really hard to get to welding heat with the fire.

I just read up on it as much as I could on the internet, and experimented, yes.
The fire was very big, so it was less difficult than it was time consuming.

Did you have to try loads of times, or did it just sort of work?
I'm planning to teach myself to smith simple things (since more lessons and courses are out of the question til next september), so to see someone else who is self-taught is reassuring; there are plenty of people out there who would tell you not to bother.

It just sort of worked, I guess you'd say. Go to that knife's respective thread, and I explain in short how/what I did.

Okay I have one problem that I need to fix this weekend so I can present the tanto next week.
I need to close up/bond the Habaki seam. What is the easiest method to do so? Sam, Dan?
