Guess that's all Global Gear katanas amount to: looks good. I also agree that this hamon is real, maybe they used something to bring it out more, but it's real.
Honestly, i'm sure i won't be buying anything from them. Sorry, but giving you false sword information is a big "no no" on my list. That's what ebay wallhangers sellers do.

its just my paul chen practical is etched (to expensive to polish out the real hamon so they etch one even though the damn thing is diff temp )and it looks exactly the same. it just looks nothing like the hamons ive seen on mine and others nihonto, and nothing even like whats on the new global gear katanas (see that thread i refered to earlier for the pic).
to be honest though all etched, counter polished etc false hamon are pretty much of a muchness although id be interested in seeing detailed pics of each type and seeing how they compare.
anyway still sorry to hear u got a duff one. i havent given up just yet on global though for the sole reason of the look of there new katanas i mentioned. they are worth the money just a display piece...

in fact ive just checked out the better res pics on global gears website and you seem to be correct, it does look natural and has some nice activity. I guess its just seeing that gunome pattern on a production sword just screams 'fake hamon'!! so glad manufactorers are starting to move away from it....
in which case for the money you paid, you expect a natural un-etched hamon, but complain about fake same and nylon ito? at our price range you tend to get one or the other, nice fittings and etched basic blade, or nice balde and basic fittings.
still the fault with the kissaki alone deserves a refund and a grovelling apology. shame you burnt and then unwrapped the ito though as youve got no chance now. i see what you are saying about the cost of shipping it back, but ive heard global gears cust service is excellant and they might have even covered the shipping once they had seen the pics???

You know, it's not about expecting things. From what he wrote, Global Gear stated these were real same and ito, not some synthetic crap. That's what i find unacceptable. Be honest with your customers, eh?

thats true, if it was advertised as real same and real silk ito then yes he was ripped off.
However the global gear website advertises the ito as 'heavy duty cotton wrap'. doesnt say anything about being proper japansese ito. I still need someone like dan davis or one of the forge guys to give there opinion about the same as real same is very hard and plasticky in my expieriance.
Also isnt being see -through make it more likely to be real same? never seen see through plastic used on katanas, and I assume ray-skin, like most skin is see through.
i dont deny the bloke got a poor deal. i just felt as he didnt try to get a refund he didnt give the supplier a chance to put things right. all sword manufactorers sell the odd dud sword. just check out the recent gen 2 issues and people still have faith in them. My point was that is the temper wasnt messed up on the kissaki then he would have got a nice sword for the money..
blimey im defending global gear here but have never even bought one of there swords!! the thing is, any major sword maker that sells the quantity they do will have a certain amount of duds slip through the net. the makers reputation depends on how they deal with these issues when they arise. we have to be carefull not to over-react when a bad example crops up and rush to shout 'ill never buy from them' when they werent given the chance to make good on the transaction.
if we decided to not buy a sword from a manufactorer because of an example of a duff sword that was sold then im afraid you'd be left with no-one to buy from!! apart from maybe brenno swords!!!

Well the reason I bought the katana in the first place was the hamon the rest I did not care about and I still don't as I can/will fix them, the blade(exept for the tip of the kissaki) has proven to be really though as I could cut a small tree with it and it diden't even show a sign of damage on the blade. But the kissaki is the one thing that I'm sad about as it is a crucial part of the katana or the most important part of a katana and it's faulty. But if I can harden the tip with the method Brenno told me about I won't be sorry I bought the katana. All because I'm in love with that hamon . The thing with this katana that's weird is that the blade is obviously really nice, I think that my kissaki is just a screwup made by the grinder. The saya is nice, the tsuba, kashira are really nice done. But why add nylon ito and plastic same to that? I mean usually it's the way around right? Bad blade and good fittings?

i agree sl4k. however it comes down to costs. it cost you about $250 (us dollars) am i right? You are getting a hell of a deal for the money there in my eyes (if they hadnt screwed the temper obviously). You get a wooden display case. A sword bag. A sword care kit. A clay tempered blade with proper polish (i.e natural hamon), and a nice tsuba and saya. to expect real same and proper ito for that money is asking abit much mate, in my eyes anyway. maybe one day soon we will get a package like that. suppose the nearest that comes close is the chenness kaze. However i believe this is more than $250, and doesnt come with the sword bag, sword care kit, plus your tsuba is much nicer than the chenness ones in my view. sorry it didnt work out for you anyway mate. im sure you can salvage it though and will give you a nice little project to get your teeth into. hope your next purchase goes better

Carlitobrigante, "heavy duty cotton wrap" is cotton as the name says, not nylon. Nylon is way worse than cotton and is simple cheating on the customer here. I don't know about the same, guess we'd have to see a very close pics, well, i'm rather into believing sl4k that it's a fake one. Indeed, he could have contacted them on this, but the real point why i'm not going to buy swords from them is providing false information which equals to pretty much "ripping you off".
Also i don't believe a katana with hamon going halfway the kissaki could slip past the quality check. I'm more into believing that their swords have hamons like this, or that they really don't give a damn.

Yes if the kissaki would not have been the way it is, I could have paid 250usd for just the blade as I love the hamon so, it's like a damn shinken tbh. But yea saying that it is real same and cotton wrap when it's not is just stupid. Why not admit it, I would have bought it anyway. And because it's nylon ito does not mean they can't do a proper job while wrapping it, which they did not.
Oh and does real same melt when having a lighter under it? My does >_>.

Well, with this i'm 100% positive this is a plastic one:p Sorry, nylon instead of cotton would piss me off, but also plastic same is going way overboard. Nylon and plastic same on 250$ sword? Sorry, even if the blade would be top notch i would never agree to nylon and plastic on 250$ sword. That's the kind of material you'd use on a 150$ or less sword.

well if you had said it melted and smelled of plastic instead of saying its hard and transparant then it would have been obvious to me it was fake same!! skin melts though so im assuming ray skin does too although im certainly no expert on ray skin. Its just wierd that they are a massive company who seem to be obviously mis-selling a product, not only that but all the other peeps on here who have a global have said it is real same so why have they suddenly switched to fake??
was this bought from ebay or direct from the website? if its ebay then theres always a good chance it was a second. If it was direct from global gear then you should email them and ask them why your sword has nylon ito and plastic same when the advert on there site clearly describes it as real same and cotton ito. then post the reponse here so we can see what they say.
and bytheway you seriously believe global gear are selling there swords intentionally with a dodgy hamon / kissaki?? im more inclined to believe a quality checker at a chinese forge got sloppy and missed it during checking hundreds of swords. who would want to buy one with a kissaki like this!!!! plus all the photos on there site & pics of other peoples global gears show a normal healthy hamon so it has got to me a quality control issue..
you would be surprised what can slip through the net at some of these forges that pump out hundreds of katana after katana. although granted its a bloody big thing to miss! even more reason why you should let global gear know about this directly so they can boot there quality control people up the ass!!!

I bought it of ebay, but when I bought it I got an email from the same mail that is used on their webbsite so it can't be someone else that sold it really. And yes it smelled like plastic when it melded and it was burning and melting like plastic, and no skin does not melt and drip when you hold a lighter under it for a few seconds. And I would have told you about the lighter on the same if I could have I but I just did it when I wrote it, I hadn't removed the ito before.

Well, sorry, no matter how i look at this piece for example, the hamon is fake and it looks worse than Musashi's 150$ line -.- www.globalgear.com.au/prod1706.htmOk, seems like they don't mean it as a real hamon, but still it sounds strange O.o www.globalgear.com.au/prod2810.htmOn this piece hamon looks etched quite a bit, ito looks like nylon to me, same seems fishy. Not to mention that on one pic i see tsuka's wood sticking out a little bit. Couldn't find any pics that would show hamon on the kissaki, don't have time to search throught all of them right now. On the other hand i found this: www.globalgear.com.au/prod2824.htmHamon looks etched, ends before habaki, kinda lame on sword for 490$?

Ive come to mistrust globalgear. With musashi out there, there is truly no reason to buy any of their lower-end swords, and cheness and hanwei cover the other end of the spectrum. Its really a shame for those in australia.

bytheway do you own a katana with a real natural hamon? If not then I wonder how you can compare, the last picture of the g-601 katana on their website shows a real natural "smoky" hamon. There is no way they can etch that if they aren't using a very very skilled artist to paint the etch.

I'm sure / almost sure it's real, but with some acid enchancing. I'm not very knowledgeable yet about hamons, but from what i've seen so far, acid tends to color the normally white line to black and i don't really like the color of the steel on hamon part there ( where light falls on the blade ). To me it looks enchanced.
