Excellent review, Shadow. I don't have a Hanwei eastern blade yet tho I think I see one down the road for me. Karma for a job well done.

Fantastic review shadowskil. ;D I really enjoyed reading it and Kudos to Mike at nihonzashi too - he has an excellent site and I learned a lot when I first read it too. I will probably be putting this review on the main website soon (well, have a bit of a review backlog at the moment) and will keep all the references to Mike in there of course, though as we also sell them at SBG too, I'll likely add in a couple of freebies to sweeten the deal for SBG visitors (after all, the SBG store is what makes SBG possible, but I won't take anything away from Mike - and the prices are as low as they are authorized to be!) Anyway, karma and kudos. - Paul

Thank you Paul, I have a lot of admiration for a website well done. I have a tiny bit of experience in websites, and know when I see a thoroughly done one.
I don't know if you are aware, but I am also in the market for a Cheness Kaze. I may even get a Ko Katana or even a Nagasa. I had no idea about this forum or even your store until after my purchase with Mike.
Now that I see what sweet deals you have I will definitely be supporting the SBG store. I love this forum, it is a blessing to me as I'm sure it is the same for many others.
Thanks for the compliment, and I will be sure to add some vids of my tatami slicing when I get them in sometime this week. ;D

Thanks Shadowskil, I look forward to seeing the tatami vids. I have little doubt that it will do very nicely against them. As to the Kaze, it is a very different sword - considerably heavier actually and with a little more 'ooph' behind it, but lacking perhaps the grace of the new Hanwei line. It is quite a tatami killer however, and definitely in my books Hanwei and Cheness rule the market for authentic sub US$300 Katana... Anyway, great to have you onboard and look forward to seeing more reviews. Cheers, - Paul

Here is a sample of a video I took over the weekend. The tatami didn't get a chance to soak all the way through, so the last cut you see as 'not quite solid' is deceptive to the blade's sharpness.
Overall, I have had nothing but good times with this sword, the only thing is that I have had to re-shim the opening of the saya, but that is to be expected with any katana...
well, enjoy fellas! I have my eye on a Cheness (Kaze and and Iaito), and when I get it, I will hopefully put together a more thoroughly done review.

It does suck that Jingum are so much more costly. Shinken are so widely avaliable. I am getting an MAS katana, they make excellent jingum as well, you should take a look, they are very solid and hold up to almost anything you can throw at them. If you are looing for a long lasting sword that is...

It looks like a ripper. Shadowskil10, I see this has a 11" tsuka which is closer to the traditional size. Many katana available in the lower end market are coming out with 14" / 15" tsuka. With your experience I wonder how you find they compare in handling to 10 or 11" tsuka. Congrats on the money well spent.

I am really eyeing the Cheness, Bujinkan Oniyuri. That, I believe has a tsuka like you're talking about. My brother has a Hanwei ?Musashi? I think? that has a long handle on it. I have done some wielding with it and it is definitely something to get used to. In my opinion, you would really have to know what you're doing in order to manipulate the extra 4 - 6 inches of mass and weight that comes with those. I have seen the Masahiro Fuji Elite, that one of my students has, and it obstructs his path of angle on some strikes. He is a bigger fellow, so it wouldn't seem like he would have much trouble, but I think it's more because of the fact that he isn't as skilled as he should be. I personally don't prefer them, but I don't own one...... yet....
