Ok, maybe I'm ignorant AND stupid... No, not at all. By no means. To test the flex, and this is learned over a period of time, and I have been at this 15 years or more, I can't remember how long now (Age). Put the tip on a board, with one hand on the handle and the other on the pommel lean into the sword making the blade go to one side or the other. But, NOTE: You have have to feel the pressure on the blade and no "once I go past this point it will take a set. Do not go near that point, that is what John C. is talking about. When you over and over go near that point you start to weaken the blade. More directly you are weakening the temper and when you weaken the temper, there you get a soft spot. Once a blade takes a set you can bend it back and easily bend it again. Thank you most kindly. I was mortified at the thought of damaging my beloved H&H. Yo justin, are you attacking empty bottles or full ones? My H&H cuts full ones, but not empty ones. It seems sharp enough to me.

. . . Anyway, after a nice chat with Shootermike(sorry about the long-distance bill, Shooter) I successfully retempered it and it literally rings(and continues ringing) after each cut for several seconds. The blade is stiffer and can be flexed just as far(if not further) than before without taking a set. So everything's a-okay now. how did you "retemper" the blade? if it is too soft, it must be heat treated and quenched. then, it is tempered to the required state.

Matt, It could cut full 1 gal. milk jugs but full 20 oz. bottles would just go flying.
I cut 1 milk jug and attempted to cut a 20 oz twice and after it failed to do so it sat in my closet for a couple weeks.
I have 3 other swords so when I went cutting (every saturday) I would leave that one at home, as I have become kind of spoiled after using the Paul Chen Ninja, that sword goes through everything I have thrown at it with no effort.

Justin it might have to do with the way you're cutting. I can cut 20 oz. with just about any swords I own...
any way you can make a video?
I remember when my girlfriend came over for test cutting she made a few lousy cuts on a water bottle and I had the luxury of being able to watch her to see what was wrong (edge alignment in her case) and quickly being able to modify it. Can't say the same about myself though as I've never seen myself cut. She was using my albion Ritter which mkes mincemeat of anything in my hands.

I have a pretty decent digital camera and a youtube account so when I go cutting this saturday I can take a video, but the Elven is on its way to AoV, When I get the replacement sword I will surely take a vid.

I don't know Rammstein, I just find odd that he can cut with one sword(the Hanwei ninja) but not the other. Now I know that the technique used to cut with a Japanese sword is a little different but still....

My $49 Musashi sword makes a real good attempt and has about a 50/50 chance of going all the way through or leaving a good size gash, so maybe the way I swing a western sword is just all fubar.

Have you tried a more slicing motion? You can get spoiled on curved swords because their curve allows for a natural slice to the blow. With a straight sword, this needs to be applied manually. Try dragging the blade along when you cut instead of just wacking the bottle. Depending on the sword, that may work well (a standard hack that is) but apparently you're going to need more than that . Give it a shot!

Well, when I get my Gen2 Elven king I'll see how it cuts and let you know. It may just be bad luck that It doesnt cut right.

Hmmm, you said you could easly cut through the box it came in right? Was it unsupported and was it rectangular in shape? Reason I'm asing is because whenever I try to cut a box that carried my sword it just kinda got knocked over.

Gaurdian, boxes are hard to cut. Don't feel bad if you can't do it well, I for one can't manage it. I sometimes get lucky and am able to cut it, but I find sword boxes to be one of the hardest mediums I've ever cut. And I have good edge alignment too.

Yes, it was rectangular and unsupported. Once I get more regular access to a better computer(I lost access to the old computer when I moved), I'll get the videos uploaded.
