Hello everyone! New member here! First off, I have to say that this site is amazing. It has been incredibly helpful. Alright, on to other things. I just recently have become a sword enthusiast and collector/backyard cutter.
I got my first sword at the Bristol ren fair in Wisconsin about two weeks ago, and after that I was hooked! I wanted to ask you guys if you thought that I have made some wise choices so far in my sword selections. First off, I saved up alot of money for the ren fair because I knew I'd be buying some expensive stuff, so I had alot of money to spend.
Before the ren fair I knew absolutely nothing about swords. Anyway, I saw the Tinker Pearce Great Sword of War and fell in love. When I got home I did a ton of research, mostly on this site, and now I have at least a passable knowledge of swords. With the rest of the money I had saved I ordered the Tinker Pearce Bastard Sword with fuller (Which I've received already) and the Valiant Armoury Signature Kriegschwert Sword (which I won't be here for one to two months). Now, all my ren fair money is gone and I have to start saving up again for my next sword, haha.
Basically I'm looking for good tough swords that someone could actually have used back in medieval times. So, do you guys think I got some pretty decent ones to start my collection?

Sounds like you've got some pretty decent pieces there!
Just as a personal pet peeve though, "medieval times" is not a historically acceptable term. Medieval is simply an adjective, but for some reason the history field hates the term "medieval times".
I'm really envious though, you got good swords right off the bat! Most of us, to my knowledge, end up getting a few pretty bad ones before finding good ones.

You just bought 3 of the best swords on the sub-$300 market. GREAT choices! Personally, I have cut with a H/T Fullered Bastard and have on on the way right now... and I love it. AWESOME handling, if mediocre looks. I have also handled the VA Kreig, and I've pined for one for over a year now.... the one I handled was the 1st Gen, and yours is even better. The H/T GSoW... I've heard varied reports of. Some love it, some not so much... but it's undoubtably a good sword, just not for everyone. Congrats on a great start to your collection! ;D -Slayer

Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback! Yeah, I think the next sword I'm going to get is the BorderWatch by Angus Trim. www.christianfletcher.com/Christian_Fletcher/Borderwatch.html I can't really find any reviews or anything on it, do you guys know if its pretty good? I would hope so considering the price, haha. I'm going to have to save up forever for that one.

Maybe I'll be the first, haha. Its going to take me a long time to save up enough money for it, so someone else might get to it first. I just LOVE the way that sword looks. If only I could get the handle and scabbard in dark blue... *drools*

Wow! Ok, first off I wouldn't say you've picked the "best" swords because "best is a subjective term. It's like asking what the "best" vehicle is on the market. It all depends on what you need it for. But as far as your choices, you got some lovely peices right off the bat. Pat yourself on the back for doing enough research to stay away from questionable swords. Next, any time you want to use "Medieval Times" just substitue "Middle Ages" or "Back in the day". I'm not sure why, but people don't like "Medieval Times." On the same note... All of the swords you've bought would have been right at home back in the day. Granted they didn't have a hex nut assembly, but if it were easy for them to do so, I'm sure we'd see plenty of examples. There seems to be this myth that swords back then were 10lbs for single handers and 15lbs for two handers. Well, this just isn't so. Swords were a weapon and they needed to be wielded by people of average strength. As far as the sword from Angus Trim, you need not worry one bit. I have NEVER heard of a bad sword coming from him. Sure there have been some minor details with how the edge was terminated, or there was a "whoopsy" here and there, but for a harmonically balanced, responsive sword, he is towards the top of the list, if not ON top of the list for places to go. As for the Great Sword of War (GSOW). I have one myself and it has a bit of a learning curve. The natural way that your body wants to swing it will not give you the best edge alignment. Both me and my friend have had one and I've noticed that both of us tilt the edge up to much when swinging. But it just takes some practice and muscle memory and it's a very great cutter. Also, the edge on the GSOW is a false edge (aka secondary bevel) It will still cut, but it's trying to seperate the mass of the target to quickly, which transfers energy to the target. Basically this means that it's very unlikely that you'll be getting clean cuts with it straight out of the box. There are ways to fix this with files and sandpaper, and I would highly recommend doing so to enjoy the sword to it's fullest. The Bastard sword might have the same problem. Hanwei has never had much luck with european edges for some reason. If you want to know more about all of this, just send me a PM, or heck, I'd even be happy to answer it further in this thread. Also, welcome to SBG! We are about to move in a month or so, but that doesn't mean we can't go on as usual until then. I've enjoyed my time here very much and I'm sure you'll fit right in with the rest of us sword nuts. I think I covered all questions you've had so far. If you have any more, just ask away, no matter how newbie'ish you might think they are. None of us crawled out of the womb with a sword in our hand... Except for maybe ShooterMike, we are still looking for his birth certificate. If only I could get the handle and scabbard in dark blue... *drools* Mr. Fletcher is the guy that does the finishing work for Mr. Trim. He often comes here to SBG to share new merchandise, get customer feedback and is just all around a great guy. If you want the color in dark blue, he would have no problem doing one in blue for ya. Well, I don't want to put words into his mouth, but from what I've seen in the past, it's the kind of thing he'd do.

Welcome to the board, it sounds like you have made a good initial selection. The one problem you might find is that some of the hanwei swords don't have that good an edge, and really need re-sharpening to achieve their full potential.

Good to meet you Emporerpants. I have the Greats Sword or Wars and had the Kriegschwert. Both excellent choices you have made there. I hear the Tinker Bastard fuller is a nice one too. It on my wish list. I think you are off to a great start at a good collection. Welcome to a life long obsession...er.. interest.

Thanks guys! I have to say this is one of the friendliest forums of any kind that I've ever been on! Yeah, I noticed that my Great Sword of War and my Bastard Sword needed sharpening and I already made an appointment to have them sharpened at a sharpening service in the area. The guy says that he's sharpened swords before but not ones as long as I have haha. They'll cost me $10 dollars each. Not to bad, I was expecting it would cost me alot more. So Greg, is it easy to sharpen swords yourself? I have no idea how to do it and I'm a little nervous about trying.
Also, does the Kriedschwert come sharpened pretty good? I ordered it off of Swords of Might and the site says that it comes fully sharpened.

Far as I know all of the VA swords come with a good sharpened edge. At least I haven't heard anything to the contrary. I still eventually want to get a hedemark and a crusader, but I seriously need to stop spending money for a while and catch up on bills lol.

Hey emporerpants, great job on bypassing the whole SLO stage and going to quality swords right off the bat I also have a Tinker GSOW, I like it a lot, it is my favorite sword to use in photos, but I will say it was my most challenging sword to sharpen due to it's length I finally got it shaving sharp ;D I hope that sharpener guy does you a good job on your blades!

Thanks! now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I want to have him sharpen them or not. I'm not sure how he sharpens and if he uses power tools I know that can damage the blade. I am still going to have him widen the throat on my scabbard for my Tinker Pearce bastard sword, but I think I might sharpen the blade itself with an accusharp.

Also, it doesn't help his cause that I drove for half and hour to get to his house yesterday (he runs his sharpening service from home) and he totally forgot about me and wasn't there haha. I'll still have him sharpen my swords if it turns out he uses an acceptable method I suppose.

Power tools won't hurt a blade if he knows how to use them right . with a belt sander, you just have to keep moving the blade edge back and forth, and not stay in any on place too long, or heat will build up and cause the metal to change color and soften Plus there would be uneven spots in the edge. I would think if this guy is an experienced knife sharpener, he should be able to apply those same skills to sharpening swords Most folks here hate accusharps
