My offering comes from my own heritage- Argentinian. Below I've listed links with details, but to paraphrase: The people/culture is the Spanish gaucho- sort of a nomadic cowboy and rebel to the conquering Europeans- does this fit your idea? The knife I thought of looks like this: -this is the kind of knife I used to see in pictures and in our home. I came to find it was a traditional Spanish knife used by the gaucho for everything- hunting, fighting, eating, utility- very all purpose and as I was taught it was a traditional and culturally important- something every proper Argentine would have. I knew it by the name 'facon' or 'faconito' (ito meaning little)--- according to the web the knife I show here is not a facon, it's a 'verijero' but I think what is described in the links below as facon would suit you well; the facon looks more like this: -I remember a knife very much like this on a wall in some family members home... Personally I think the names are all interchangeable depending on who you talk to and how they came to know the knife being spoken of. What seemed relevant to me was the fact that this knife never left the gauchos side even after being influenced/conquered by outsiders, and it was respected as being truly all purpose. How about a Scottish Dirk? Seems to suit your criteria of an all purpose, single edged type of knife.

Anyone mention a sax/seax/scramasax yet? Hooray multi-named weapon! Almost every Germanic man would carry one. Norse, English, German, Dutch.... Carried by hunters, woodsmen, warriors, basically anyone who might need to cut something/someone in a day. And with a foot-long blade, it made just as good a weapon as it did a tool.

chris: An excellent suggestion and I appreciate the extra information. I may use that instead of the Persian Kard I currently have. mike: I'd considered a dirk when originally considering designs, but it doesn't seem to be very applicable to utility tasks. Marc & John: Thanks for the kind words! I hope to do the concept justice, so it will be written after I finish my first two books (a duet collectively known as Twilight and no, it has nothing to do with those books about sparkly fairies; it comes from a bi-millenial simultaneously solar and lunar eclipse (the world it takes place on has two moons) that lasts for a week and the light from both eclipses make the world appear in a never-ending twilight). hero: Thanks for the suggestion, but I already have that one on my list!

When will the Twilight books be finished vincentdolan That is a very good question. I'm currently working on what I hope to be the final draft of the first one, however, I recently had to rework the books because the original pacing of the first one was waaaaay too fast (plus, I inadvertently made things too easy for my main character) and ended up moving much of the story into the second one, which means I now need to refill the first one. I have it all planned out, luckily, so the problem becomes actually writing it (a problem I won't have with the second one, which I could probably write in a few months). I'd like to have it done by this time next year, but even if I manage that, there's the issue of publishing; self-publishing is ruinously expensive and traditional publishing can take up to 6 months before you even hear back from the company on whether or not they're even interested. So in that respect, it depends on if I can save up the money to publish it myself or if it gets accepted by a traditional publisher, whichever comes first. Anyways, here's something that ought to interest you if you're interested in the story. I originally had a dream that led to the creation of this story and wrote some of it down when I woke up. Cool, Give kinda a Idea of the people, Good choises all around...SanMarc. Thanks, Marc. They're generally an average sized people, so I figured an average sized knife would be appropriate for them.
