Thanks for that info Greg. That is actually how I'm doing mine. Though I got some Brazilian hard wood, and I can't remember what tree it's from, and it is hard so it's been a slow process.

Ah, well I haven't experimented with anything aside from poplar. I thought that most other woods aside from poplar had some sort of natural acid that would do things to high carbon steel.
Then again, maybe it has nothing to do with corrosion, but only staining the blade and the like... which wouldn't matter because it's on the inside of the handle.
