I'm sure you're all familiar with the Gen 2 15th C scottish single handed sword. Many will be aware that I bought one, which had a faulty blade. (Review here: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=1188899245 ) Well if you're wondering what happened to it: The massive cost of shipping it back to Clyde from Western Australia meant that it was not worth the cost of returning. So Clyde allowed me to leave it adorning my wall. Many of you will also be familiar with my way of never leaving good enough alone. So this is what I've done: Cut down the Blade, removing 170mm from the end of it. Which I turned into a dagger / dubh. See this thread: /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1189443203 The Pommel was a bit boring, and not comfortable for a second hand. So I scolloped it and grooved it to give a kind of seashell look. I also chiseled a celtic knot on the grip, and used the dremel to engrave a Scottish Thistle on the pommel, and on the Scabbard throat. I did 2 different styles of thistle, which I use to tell me which way to insert the sword in the scabbard, as it only fits one way. Here she is:

WOW...Just WOW. You've done another really impressive job there, Brenno. I always thought this sword looked ugly (just my opinion and taste) but this totally changes that impression. I never considered what a change to the pommel would make to the overall look of the sword. Kudos on the engraving too. It's never occurred to me that Celtic knot-work would look so at home on a sword hilt.
And from the looks of the background, your place there looks beautiful too. Wish mine was all green like that. Just coming onto winter here and everything is brown and dead-looking.

Wow.....
Brenno my man, you never cease to astound me with your skill.
You would have made a fine Royal Armorer. ;D
Karma, that is one of the best Scotch thistle's I have ever seen reproduced.

Impressive!
When life gives you a broken sword, you make a better one!
How does it handle etc? It certainly looks like an effective weapon...

How does it handle etc? It certainly looks like an effective weapon... Its not bad actually. The blade is only 26" now. It still feels fairly heavy, but has better balance now. It fits two hands well too, which I need for decent cuts. It rings beautifully whenever I strike anything. It feels very solid. And it cuts very well. But short. I may reduce the length of the cross arms 20mm to get it back in scale.

Holy Sh*t Brenno! O.o Nice job man. I was totally unimpressed with the look of that sword to begin with. I still don't know about those quillions but the pommel balances them visually now and the engraving is just $$. Karma

Hey Brenno, when I first saw it, I thought "he should really shorten the cross arms a bit, it looks odd." The rest of the sword is gorgeous though. I really love the work you've put into it. The scalloped pommel is the best. *Sigh* I feel like I'm coming off as some sort of fanboy now. Mentioning in all your threads how great yout pieces are. Haha. Oh well, might as well Karma you one to seal my fate! And Ric, no worries, I laughed at the Klan joke.

Yeah, those cross arms are large to begin with, and now the blade's much shorter they look a little funny. I have done a mock up (on computer) of how it would look with a bit cut off. Better hey? I'm glad you guys like my work. I hope I can inspire others to get crafty on their swords. Before After

Brenno, Have you considered engraving thistle tips on those quillions? Something like this only more elaborate.

It looks better. You might want to consider shortening it moreso, though...I always thought that crossguard style was a real hinderance. Even if you shortened each arm to be even with the point on the blade where the edge stops, it should still be more than enough to protect your hand.

Brenno, Have you considered engraving thistle tips on those quillions? Something like this only more elaborate. That is very tempting. I just might try it. Only I'd have a dimpled pattern on the round bit, and grooves up the cone bit on top. It might be hard with the cross in situ, and using only a dremel, but I can always cut it back if I mess it up. It looks better. You might want to consider shortening it moreso, though...I always thought that crossguard style was a real hinderance. Even if you shortened each arm to be even with the point on the blade where the edge stops, it should still be more than enough to protect your hand. You reckon like this? It looks alright hey?

Actually, that's exactly what I meant. I think that last picture is beautiful.
Then again, it's your sword mate.
