Evening swordspeople, I am still getting into European cutting mostly, but CAS are doing my head in with great deals on any of the Raptor Katana's. So I want to take the plunge on one, and read up all the reviews I could find. I like that they are made from 5160 like the Tinker's so I won't bend a blade with my lack of ability. So can I hear thoughts on whats the best one for a beginner Euro cutter with hardly any knowledge of Japanese swords or style and why ?? Thankyou ! Rob

From your collection in your avatar, (if those are, in fact, yours) It seems you like longer swords. The Nanbokucho is 30". The Mohoha has a double edge on the tip like most euros. They should all hold up the same. From the reviews, they are very well made and are great cutters.

Thanks, The Mohoha "looks" cool and I really like the double fullers. And I do like the Nanbokucho - thats like the big hitter right. Are these swords considered thin or whippy in 5160 or just right? Many thanks, Rob From your collection in your avatar, (if those are, in fact, yours) It seems you like longer swords. The Nanbokucho is 30". The Mohoha has a double edge on the tip like most euros. They are considered quite hefty, from what I've gathered. Well balanced, but just a little heavy. Perhaps someone who owns one could chime in.

I've been eyeing the Unokubi and the Mohoha, myself. I love the double edge on the Mohoha, and the Unokubi looks like it could punch a nasty hole in something.

The false edge of the mohoha is NOT sharp, btw... and the blade length is around 26", IIRC... so that would rule it out if you like longer swords. It is, however, the one that *I'm* most interested in, lol. I don't have any 1st hand experience with these, though... just relaying what I've read of the specs. The nanbokucho does seem to be the hard hitter of the bunch, outweighing the 2nd heaviest by 3 oz, and the longest blade by 1", though it is tied with the Shobu for the longest tsuka at 13"... I'll post more specs in a sec, I have an idea. -Slayer

I just picked up the Raptor Nanbokucho Katana and the Raptor Wakizashi from Richard at Sword Nation, he had a heck of a deal. They just came today and both of them feel good holding them right out of the box. Haven't cut with them yet though.
PM sent. (I never look at my msg. box and some times it's days before I notice I have a msg.)

Thanks Rob,
Yes the awesome deal from CAS is why I'm looking at these. Very interested to hear what you think of them and cutting with them.
And thanks Slayer - I've been goinh over the stats but they are all so mildly different just not sure if they are right for a begginer like me.
Appreciate the help,
Rob

No prob, Rob. ;D I just thought it would help to have them side by side... or in this case, in a row. I know it's hard to keep stats straight when you're having to switch pages around and find them. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong... but if you have any specific desire for your new katana (heavy duty cutter, longer blade, shorter blade, longer handle, fast multi-cutter, etc), just let us know and I'm sure you'll get soe educated opinions on what suits your wants the best. -Slayer

I've had the UnoKubi, Shobu, and Nanbokucho of the raptors... my favorite in balance and feel is the Unokubi... but I HATE the hump on end of the blade, really bugs me. If it dosn't bother you... I recomend that one.

I have the Unokubi and Shobu. Both are solid and cut well. The hump is strange though.

My vote is for the Unokobi. I love the blade geometry. It's what I'll be getting if my friend decides to go in halvsies with me.

That Nanbokucho blade looks pretty nice, such an interesting time for Japanese swords it was. I'd say that's not even quite as big as they got, some apparently reached around 90 cm nagasa and were generally big, heavy, powerful cleavers. I just love Koto era swords in general, I think they're underrepresented in the modern market and am glad Hanwei is producing an example. I'd recommend OP get that one as well, and I might have to look into it myself.

The SBG sword store has a buy one get one free deal going on. Then you wouldn't have to decide between designs!
Edit* ACK! Somehow totally missed this already being on the first page... Whoops!
