Last time I talked to Sonny, he was expecting a new shipment of these. They were going to be first of those to made from China, not Phillipines. I am going to get a few in the next couple days and can tell you more then.
Cheers, Rob

The leather sure looks like Sonny's style. Looking forward to more info on this, though I'm not really the target demographic, preferring longer blades myself.

Hey, I like the look of these. The original Pretorian got pretty good buzz from what I read. That scabbard is a definate improvement.

Ok I got me a Pretorian. What did you all want to know?
Some quick stats Weight o/a 2lb 12oz, Sword 2lb 3oz Length 28" o/a 20" blade COB about 3 inches COP somewhere in your opponents belly!
Leather is nice, but funtional. I like waisted gladii, actually waisted or leaf's in general too. Feels good in the hand, looks to have a bit of a secondary bevel unlike the signature blades.
Some pic's for you all shortly too.
Cheers,
Rob

Hey, Rob. Does the scabbard have a wood core?

Ric,
Yes it does, but still seems fairly thin though - ie it's not a bulkysaurus scabbard.

I've been eyeing this one for a few years, but could never pull the trigger on it. Now they are made at the same forge as the other Valiant stuff and they have upgraded the leather, I am definately giving the Praetorian a try.

This might well be my first gladius. M. Mine too. I've been looking at it for a while. I generally prefer viking and medieval bastard swords (Broad blades with broad fullers is what I like), but I want to have at least one sword of each... culture? (Example, viking, medieval, a saber, a katana, roman, middle eastern shamshir ect..) for my collection. I think this will be my roman. I really like the look of it, but I think I'll wait and see if it turns out to be nice and sturdy. You guys will have to let me know. I'm very interested in this sword!

Just ordered one from Reliks. The price was too good to pass up and I've been interested in Roman swords for a while.

Well, I've received mine today. Ordered from Stromlo Swords on Fri, and it got here today. That's like, one day shipping, or something. Sweet, eh?
Some good and some bad, but about right for 'round $200 wherever you buy it. Personally I'm satisfied for what I paid.
I guess I'll make a short little list of the cons: -visible glue on some parts on the back of the scabbard (for those little leather strap things) -rough secondary bevel (as in the secondary bevel was done in a pretty low grit) -some wiggle of the brass plate (what I'd call a giant seppa) -i have no idea as to how to disassemble this at the moment (if anyone happens to know how to do so, I'd appreciate some directions or something) -fit and finish aren't awesome, {as in: some small scratches on the blade, scratches on the side of the pommel with the little brass thing sticking out of it... as if the guy who tightened the brass thing at the factory was a bit sloppy and had the tool scratch the wood a bit} (but I'm a bit spoiled by the VA Signature line as of late). don't expect the leather-work to be on the same par as the VA Sigs. duh, I guess. -sword will fall out of scabbard if held upside-down. not surprising, really, but probably noteworthy to at least someone else around here.
I was going to list some pros, but I'm really only good at negative thinking, so I guess not. All of those cons can be easily fixed though, I think. At least, that's what my sleepy little mind is telling me.
Anyways, give a hand to Rob at stromloswords. His super-fast, seemingly-wait-free shipping is probably a huge factor in my satisfaction of this latest purchase.
G'night, y'all.
*Whoops, forgot to say... I don't know ANYTHING about gladii. I'm a katana guy, actually. Feel free to throw stones at me.

Thanks for you impressions, Dom. I'm a bit disappointed in the glue on strappy thingies. The rest seems to be standard for this sword so it would appear the upgrade would just involve the scabbard. That being the case I'd have to wait for the price to drop before I'd pick up this one. I still like the sword but not at $200 bucks. Anyhow, have a karma.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it could be nice with a bit of a touch up. I'll probably still get it, but like RicWilly I'll wait for the price to drop.

Well... I got a little bit cheaper, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to talk about that. PM Rob about it, maybe? Anyways, thanks for the karma! Means a lot.
