Okay, so I know that I'll get a few cheeky replies to this but.... Here goes.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! IF YOU CAN USE PROPER ENGLISH, DO!
The contraction of the words "you" and "are" is... Gasp..... "You're", not "UR"!!!!!
Emoticons, fine. Commonly used contractions and abbreviations (IMHO, ROFL, GTFO ;D) are fine and add levity and convey humorous tone. HOWEVER, if you use text-message-style abbreviations or improper punctuation SO HELP ME GOD I will SMITE you.
Also, it is a great courtesy to our members for whom English is NOT their first language, as it makes our discussions much easier to follow (this is actually the main reason I bring this up).
With civil thanks, Bryn
(ten to one, the first response this gets is some uppity b@stard saying "ur jst b-ing Silly, lol rofl etc. etc.)

I must admit that although I agree with you I was sorely tempted to respond with something like in your post-however I wont.It also sends me off sometimes but some are not capable of spelling correctly-its just not taught in our educational systems anymore.DJ

I can totally understand using "ur, l8r, omw, ect ect" with traditional cell phones. Back with the old styles you had to type on a NUMBER PAD, you younger generation might not remember... and it was quicker. Heck, even on today's smart phones and whatnot there is still a 160 character limit to most text messages, so shortening the message to get it all to fit required some clever usage of characters.
But on a forum where you have 60,000 characters to work with any post, you'd be hard pressed to use it all up. If for some reason you manage to, you can always post again at no cost.
But I'm backing the OP on this one. Stop being lazy and break the habit of chatty text.

They don't need to learn how to add or multiply since they can just use a calculator. Welcome to being old, and just not understanding kids these days. They live in a different world that makes sense to them. You will find it harder and harder to fight against this text talk, and other exciting new stuff. I am not defending it, really. I just have recognized how it goes, it is the widening divide between generations. Love it, hate it, fight it, embrace it it matters little since it will eventually be replaced by the even newer generations. ;D

The part I have a hard time understanding is that we have a spell checker here, and I have even seen posters go to the trouble of typing that they aren't sure how to spell something, when all they have to do is use the spell checker

I'd like to encourage complete sentences from all members. Also, the words "there", "their" and "they're" are not the same word, please try to use the right one. After we do that I'll get the guys at work to do the same thing and while I'm dreaming I'd like a Tinker custom type XIX longsword.
Edit: Ouch, I should have proof read my post. I'd like some embarrassment to go with my irony please.

Yes, well, try "etc." Here we are discussing proper grammar and you're agreeing that it should be done and not doing it yourself... The full word is "etcetera" for those not having encountered it before.

They don't need to learn how to add or multiply since they can just use a calculator. That, at least, is easy to fight against. Put them in a situation where they can't use a calculator. Either they can do it without one and make it through or they crack up and fail and should be fired. Either way, they'll learn.

I have to disagree with that Depriving people of technology is just being mean How would you like it if someone took your car away and said it is good for you to walk, you will be healthier, or took your computer away and made you write letters instead of emails? When I took trigonometry in college, my teacher had every student buy a trig calculator, and explained that he was going to teach us trigonometry, not how to look up values in tables in a book

I should probably mention that my OP (see, commonly used abbreviations can be okay) was in a rather humorous tone ( ) except for the part about good grammar being for the benefit of our ESL members (English as a Second Language). Shoot, if I were to go onto a German Forum, I know I'd appreciate them writing in Hochdeutsche.

Also, it makes you look like an idiot. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but when I see som1 typeing liek tihs I just can't take anything they say seriously. It could be a nice, smart person and all, but whenever I see text like that, I just instantly think of some drooling, mentally challenged ape banging its palms against the keyboard in a vain effort to communicate. Edit: Wanted to add, I can understand abbreviating like that while playing a multiplayer game or something, but a message board? Also, regarding the foreign thing, I've actually seen people justify typing like an idiot because "OMG engilsh is nto my 1st languege!1!"

Many people just could not understand the people who come from nonenglish speaking countries and they could not understand the poor English speaking Americans. I spoke to many people slowly with enunciation and limiting my slang, and had no problems with communication. Though the spell checker here on the forum I have to say has some issues. Like it doesn't know any sword terms. LOL

Agreed on the spell check not recognizing sword terms, lol.
I do get peeved whenever I see a post that is badly written, by someone living in the US, much less. I then remind myself that this is the internet, and no matter how awesome this forum is, it's still the internet. I have to remind myself that getting worked up over something on the internet doesn't get me anywhere.
Actually, my phone is pretty crappy, and I am forced to text using a number pad. It's kind of a hassle when I know that anyone texting me has an entire QWERTY friggin' keyboard on their phone. It's also exacerbated by my unconscious insistence to type out the entire word instead of using abbreviations.
Not to say that I'm completely guiltless in terms of using bad grammar or spelling and such. I do try to go back and fix most of my posts when I do notice something like that though. And I use 'lol' and smileys a dang lot too.

In my humble opinion, this post has only proven to be a lesson in restraint. it is a challenge to withhold from spewing forth an untold amount of culturally acceptable abbreviations for the express intent of ruffling your symbolic feathers. (laugh out loud) (just kidding) In all honesty, I too, feel that we as an English speaking nation are loosing touch with what is essentially an already simplified (and mostly stolen) language. If we are not careful, it could quickly revert to clicks and beeps along with the occasional grunts and growls. Unfortunately, most of the degradation is due to simply, a lack of respect for our culture and for ourselves. Please be mindful that I am in no way regarding those with legitimate language barriers as disrespectful. In fact, most of the foreign friends I have speak more intelligently and respectfully than some of the natives. If it were not for the Ipod, I would probably have punctured my own eardrums during my torturous daily commute on the New York subway in order not to have to listen to the constant butchering of English, from "college students" no less.

Etc means etcetera, eh? Thanks for clearing that up.
