the beauty is in the simplicty of the sword not the flash and bling bling Joey; absolutely! Even Oakeshott comments that the clean, classic lines of an unadorned sword is much more beautiful than the jeweled and highly decorated versions. I have never understood why the manufacturers, other than the "high end" ones, just can't seem to get a gladius right. my Windlass Spanish falcata seems to be, as far as I can tell, historically accurate, although many sword designs that go that far back in time are taken from artworks due to no examples having been found. If they can get a falcata right you'd think they could get at least a Pompeii style gladius right. It doesn't get much simpler than that! What this country needs is a good 5 cent cigar and an accurate Roman gladius for under $300. ;D Jim

Albion is selling bare blades now and have a couple nice gladii blades up. One of these blades, combined with a block of select hardwood and a small sheet of brass will make a solid gladius any way you want well under $300! Just mix with a file, some sandpaper, a Dremel tool, and a ball peen hammer. Check it: www.albion-swords.com/bareblades.htm

You could also take the blade from a Windlass "Gladiator Sword" which I have, and put a new hilt on it and have a pretty good facsimile of a Fulham gladius, although at 17" the blade is just a mite short. i should be able to call a vendor and say i want this sword with this fitting and it will cost how much ...ok thats how it is with the sbg custom katanas it should be like that with all swords the market would blow up with sales how many of us wish we had the money or the options to build a sword the way we want it or at least have one the way the ancient people had

the only vendors that have made attempts are albion and scorpion archerout takes a drawing from a sketch or a book and makes it to your liking and keeps the price down or at least tries to and its battle-ready

Well, the thing is, most vendors sell things made by certain manufacturers. Hahah, just being nit-picky.
Doing custom work is... a lot of work, innit? I'd think it's easier to just sell something that someone else made, and make a profit from that. Faster too. Plus custom work is going to be more expensive by nature. You can't mass produce anything custom, or semi-custom. Not if the customer's gonna choose the specifics, right? It slows down the process, if the SBG semi-customs are any indication. I mean, lil' my brother's been waitin' on his for near exactly 6 months now. Not sayin' that they're crap cuz' o' that, just that it takes a real long time, and ya gotta have patience for it. And yeah, we don't have to do whatever it was you said in your analogy. The thing about a car and welding or something. The Albion bare blades thing is more like... buying some new tires and putting them on your car yourself. Er, I think that's a better analogy. If the vendors were to do the... what you said that you should be able to do, that'd probably rise some costs and take a good while too. Granted, not as long as a full-blown custom, but a bit longer than the usual. Actually the Valiant Armoury Custom Sword Shoppe does pretty much what you want, I think. Well, more like custom hilt and scabbard work. I think Arms of Valor does something slightly similar too, but I don't remember.
Uh, forgot where I was going with this. Also, I have no clue what I'm talking about, so pretend I didn't say anything, okay? LOL.
*Okay, reading this again, I have no clue what I was talking about, but I think what you're describing with Scorpion is pretty much fully custom work. You'd have to go to Brenno, or Odinblades, or Christian Fletcher, etc. to have your design turned into a reality, methinks. No one really does that for too cheap, as far as I know. Again, I'm confusing myself, so sorry if I make no sense.
