You have found a description? That's very interesting, been looking for that myself. Seems there are three major groups through the centuries, first norse russians, then swedes and norwegians, and then a mix of european mercenaries.

So how does 1-9/16" x 1-11/16" and 1-1/2" x 1-5/8" sound for a staff thickness?
Yay or nay?

Ichiban: it depends on what you mean by centuries. Are you talking about the varangian guard?

I always liked the fact that the vikings had attacked Constantinople three times before the Emperor went, well these guys are well hard maybe if I pay them they will stop attacking my beloved city and fight my enemies instead. Though it also says something about the defenders of Constantinople that they could withstand and fight off three attacks from a large invading force of vikings, then you get some of the stories about the guard themselves which are just epic. One day I hope to have a varangian guard outfit made in this style; That aventail looks all kinds of menacing because you can only see the eyes. I love llamelar armour used to know a guy who fought in it all the time and it was brilliant. Though I would probably go with the helmet of the guy on the left because spangenhelms are easier to come by.

It's amazing that the Vikings were able to bring, what was essentially the Roman army, to their knees.
Guess that answers the "Who would win Viking / Romans" hypothetical discussions.
What do you guys think about the thickness of those 60" hickory shafts?

Have the chance to test that axe out against any wood yet, Wambo?
And brissybeater, have the chance to take / post pictures of your 2 handed axe? Is your axe cast or forged, and how is the balance with the total weight being around 4lbs?
What type of hardwood did you end up using for a shaft, and what are the dimensions of it?
Thanks!

What do you guys think about the thickness of those 60" hickory shafts? Well the Vikings didn't really bring the roman army to their knees at all. The Vikings never actually conquered Constantinople. No one actually conquered Constantinople until the Seljuk Turks, even the crusaders couldn't conquer Constantinople even though they gave it their best shot. The Byzantine army was a force to be reckoned with even without the Varangian Guard because the Varangian Guard were one unit, the bodyguard of the Emperor and in terms of the size of the other units in the army they were on the small side when they went into battle.

even the crusaders couldn't conquer Constantinople even though they gave it their best shot. They could and did, actually: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_crusadeThe Byzantines did drive them out eventually, but that was something like 60 years later...
