It's probably the smell. Kidding but seems to be the same here. No sword carrying for me, though I sometimes wear one for fun. Couple years ago I bought two bokken at a convention and had to carry them around all day. That was a pain in the...well, anyway, no sword wearing for me.

This is why we buy sword bags And even living in the woods I was a "clean" hippie - I like bathing.

As the saying goes: "Everything is illegal in Massachusetts."
Everything Liam Boyle mentioned is also illegal here in MA as well as firearms with collapsible stocks, rifle clips over 10 rounds, shotguns carrying more than 5 rounds, switchblades/assisted openers over 1 1/2 inches, double edged knives, etc. The list goes on and on. Ironically, swords are not mentioned at all, there is no blade length limit on single edged knives except in the Boston area, and there is no carrying laws on knives except again in Boston and gov/school areas.

sorry I am late to the party here, what a wonderful discussion. I would say firearms is the main culprit for swords falling out of fashion. As the gun improved people moved to its use instead of the sword. The "don't bring a sword to a gun fight" was learned very quickly. Look at the 50's American "greasers" They often fought with fists, brass knuckles, chains, bats, and the switchblade. The knife was the status symbol, for one who was truly "cool" and skilled. Then along came the "zip" guns. People learned they could make homemade firearms. Before you could get into a fight every weekend and still come back for more. But the introduction of the gun into the scene changed the entire thing. Now we have idiots doing drivebys and shooting everyone but the person they were trying for. That said, look up your state laws. Many it is legal in some form or another to carry a sword. Just like many states you can carry a gun, some even just unconcealed is the rule. As to why we never went back to it? Well some places you will see people with machete and similar long blades. So some places essentially still wear them, mostly jungle regions. Try going to Jamaica or South America and you will see a lot of machete wearing people. Another place is in most every city in the US with a martial arts instructor who teaches weapons. You have to be able to transport your sword, sai, staff, pole arm, etc to and from class. I had a friend in Philadelphia who just happen to always be going to or from class. He pointed out something very interesting. When you carry a sword, you will be confronted more often. Sometimes to the point of proving you know how to use it. So even though you can wear a sword, do you want to have to fight for real with one? I took this to heart and often wear my knives concealed for the simple reason advertising you have it, often puts you in situations you might need to use it more often. Odd isn't it? I have had to draw my sword twice in violence. Both times I have to say it becomes a very big visual deterrent. One time the people didn't even notice that my friend had my back with a nice gun in his hands. They all only saw me with 3 feet of gleaming steal coming from my hands. Each time my sword prevented further violence from happening. I think we have had blades for long enough it has become hardwired into us to fear long shiny blades in a persons hand even more than a gun. Though a gun may end up being a much deadlier threat. Well that is my 2 cents worth.

Just don't draw a shiny, metal object with the intent of preventing further violence with rednecks. They lose their minds when they see "shinies!"

i know what you mean. we had some hoodlums roaming our neighbor hood. i practice bottle cutting in front yard. the neighbors love to watch. the neighbors own pistols, but the hoodlums still came around even after a neighbor threatened one for messing w/ my motorcycle while i was at work. funny thing one day they came thru the neighbor hood while i was cutting waterbottles, and was like wow thats cool... but never came back again.

HAHAHAHA, I would say never draw any weapon with the intent on just preventing violence by the sight! If you draw a weapon in a fight without the intent to use it, you are giving your opponent your weapon essentially. This mentality is why I mentioned I keep my knives concealed usually. Best not to draw attention to the fact you have them. And I do have plenty of experience with rednecks, considering I intend to basicly be one. Well sort of. Some would call moving off the grid into a self sucficient lifestyle hippie. Some would say redneck. I say a real hippie is a redneck ;D though I don't truely subscribe to either label.

I took this to heart and often wear my knives concealed for the simple reason advertising you have it, often puts you in situations you might need to use it more often. Odd isn't it? Yup, the same exact kind of situations have happened to me before, although not in a highly tense situation to the point of the person trying to provoke me to violence. The people I have encountered for the most part simply ask me if I know how to use the blades I own as well as if they can actually be used. The unfortunate thing is most people do not realize the damage they are capable of in real life. One time we were having a party, and one of the guys who was drunk was giving me a hard time simply with randomly flipping me off and such. I ignored him for the most part because he was drunk, but my brother and a group of his buddies started chanting, "Sword! Sword! Sword!". The average person sees swords as toys or odd collectibles these days rather than deadly weapons. You can bet that they would never start chanting for a gun because guns are an obvious symbol of violence in the media and society in general. As to the point you were making, I think it's because....well people are stupid and arrogant sometimes. Some people have such inflated egos that they are subconsciously willing to risk dying or serious injury in an attempt to try and prove they had it out with someone using a weapon, especially an uncommon one in modern times.

You may be a redneck if you use your sword for a toothpick. How was that? Maybe that is why we don't wear swords anymore? People have dumbed down so much they might actually try to use a sword as a toothpick?

Heck I just use my fingernails as toothpicks...but I used to clean my fingernails with whatever knife I had on hand. I've refined the process now to using another fingernail. Though I've always wanted an "Arkansas toothpick" or what have you style knife...

"Why do you think swords have a bright polish? It's not for blinding the enemy... "...And whatever money rednecks don't spend On the sword, they Will spend on accessories to go with it: "You see this? It's an electronic range-finder. I poke my opponent with my sword and this will tell me how far away he is. See, right now we're facing each other at... ...3 feet."

Stand, cloth bag, and ohh sharpening stones, don't want to forget the maintenance kit, and a bag to carry it all in, camera to take pictures, and some lights to display it.... ohh did you say something about accessories?
