If you don't mind my asking, how wide is the tang in cm?

Thanks Opferous for such a through review... [/img] ... This new Jian does show a huge improvement over the other offerings from CAS Hanwei. We finally have another decent cutter in close to the SBG price range (MSRP $399...). You can certainly get it cheaper from me ( under $300), & hey, tis my design so I appreciate the support! At the moment CAS/Hanwei is all sold out, as are we at Seven Stars. But a container with about 100 is on the way from China & should be in, in just a few weeks. If you want one, I suggest placing you order now to be on the safe side, its proving quite popular. Please see - www.sevenstarstrading.com/html/hanwei/img/SMRjianAll.jpgThanks, all the best, Scott M. Rodell

I'm waiting until I can afford the Practical Tai Chi to move to a metal training sword. Seems like that one is good for forms but that's about it. It is a slim, slim sword. I would imagine it could handle a half mat, but not much more. Just from the pictures, this new one looks to be CONSIDERABLY more sturdy. Hyoujin, That's why I stated "forms only" for the Practical Tai Chi. This or a Jin-Shi are what I would use for actual cutting.

Exceptional review, great sword - and good to see some more choices appearing for Chinese swords in general (great move for Hanwei to get Scott Rodell involved in the design - it's a very clever trend and everyone wins in the end).
+25 review points

Just FYI even though Garrett is doing customs many of his blades as a base model as still sub $300 and still better quality than anything out there.

I have been tossing a mental coin in the air.... heads or tails... oh the heck with it... i have a hanwei cutting jian enroute to th ehouse now . i have been trying to decide between the hanwei cutter and the CS gim. your review and pics helped make up my mind, that and the incredible price at KOA.
oh and +1 to you my friend.

Ok, mine just arrived. one thing that i would like to add to your review is about the scabbard. the modern scabbards have the fittings glued on. this presents a problem when we have a lot of humidity. the wood swells and breaks the glue loose. some of the older swords that my sifu had has the pointed parts of the fittings rolled into the wood, some have them pinned to the wood. this one is pinned. i like that so you dont have the glue problems! i agree with you that the balance is wonderful. also the handle is about a hand and a half. when i made my hybrid jian from a tinker pierce bastard blade, this is about what i was trying to create. the problem w/ my hybrid is that the blade is 33 inches.
now i have a longer jian for open areas and my shorter (jin-shi) jian for narrow areas. i am good to go. this might be the last sword that i buy....(at least i told the wife that). now it is time to get my training gear for the blunts so we can start training/ sparring.

had an issue with the tang/pommel retainer nut, i thought it was the nut itself... but it turned out that it was the tang threads. it apppears as if the threads were died before the heat treat process, and thus had shrunk the OD of the shank. a regular nut would only pass a few threads and drop straight down. i will be posting how i handled this myself in repair thread. i couldnt send it back since i had already altered the tang by driling the tang/handle to add a bamboo pin. they were going to send a new nut but i blew it off.
this would be something all vendors need to be aware of for warehouse QA. i will be emailing hanwei directly with my findings since the lady on the phone so adamantly believed it was a mere fluke.

Still waiting for school to release my financial aid money so I can order a Jin-Shi. I decided to go with Garrett rather than the Hanwei.

Mine is going be built to be comparable to the Hanwei. 39" overall length Xin Jian with a slightly elongated rayskin grip. I asked for the long handle so I have the extra room for the combined CSA/WMA stuff I've been working on. Now I just need the dang money to pay Garrett.
