Thought this might be of some interest, hope I've done this right.

Okay, I will though right now this is backburnered until I get the all clear from the doc to resume practice. Does the YMAA use the 13 saber form or have they adapted the Wu style longform for saber/broadsword?

Go with the jin shi custom if you want to kill bottles, don't go with the hanwei.

Garrett might even still have some production dao around.

Garrett might even still have some production dao around. According to the website he does, are those acceptable for a guy who just wants to cut some bottles? It's a pretty nice looking ox tail dao and the price isn't bad. I gather if I wanted it sexed up some I could get it customized for a price...Starting with that as a base a custom might not be so out of reach as I've been thinking. I like this idea...

As far as I know, if Garrett's people made it, it's functional. A leftover production piece should slay those bottles just fine.
It's not like you're wanting the custom Lundemo saber I've been plotting. (I was hoping to get it off my tax refund, but my money has to go other directions this year.)
Sirtre, sorry I forgot to PM you about that back then, but I might yet. I know, there's an application to "Step to seven stars and ride the tiger" which is the opening movement to the 13 saber form, but I don't really know the true application.

I've emailed Garrett, I just might wind up with a custom after all. Edited to add: Does anyone know if I should have mentioned SBG? Does he offer a deal to forum members?

Yes, he does offer discounts to SBG people.
BTW, slackitude I posted a clip of myself doing the CMC 37 taiji hand form with my cane as a practice saber. It might give you some thoughts.

My cane is one of those big aluminum monsters, it's kind of a weapon in it's own right. Fortunately I have the wooden dao I bought for just these occasions,

I have one of those as well. Just don't try to do form with the collapsible style. I have a few bruises from that. My waster dao is actually quite short since I got it to resemble my machetes more than a dao, but it works.
