Hmm. What are we lookin' at here, is that just dark wood, or is there something underneath the wrap?

It looks to be stained wood, a very good base for customization. The leather wrap on this sword is applied after the sword has been assembled so removing it will not loosen anything, plus it has a nice oval shape.

Please elaborate on just what we are seeing in the pics.
Is there an underlying wrap around the grip core? Surely the lighter colored pieces at the ends of the grip section are not spacers are they?

No it is just a wood core, the white pieces are remaining glue an leather.
