Thanks guys - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Just picked up a tripod. I should be able to take some better pictures. This'll be good practice if you're interested in seeing some more

There's always room for more sword porn. Thanks for the review, btw. Tho I should stop reading these.. I'm trying to move to european swords but katana like this are just too damn pretty.

Excellent review. I think the leather was a great choice, and it looks like they did a very good job wrapping it. The menuki look good partially encompassed, and it's a lot better than having them glued on, which rarely lasts long. Overall, the blade looks very crisp and clean, and the theme you chose flows very nicely.
Looking forward to the additional pictures. +1 from me.

Though I've more or less "shut my door" on katanas due to a lack of space, I can't help but took a second... a third look at this gorgeous piece - darn, it's really tempting... but I'm quite sure I can't afford the price of a brand new piece, too Gorgeous sword you have there, United! Congrats..

Wow! That is a great and honest review! And the katana is just superb. I have just spent the last 20 mins on their site and some of the work is astounding for the price. A +1 for the review and bringing them to my attention!

it doesn't look like .7 sori, more like .5 or even .4 and as to it being tori, well barely. Having said that, it isn't a bad looking sword at all and the leather ito is a good choice. How do you find the leather ito?

Well barely tori is still tori And you've got a point, I might go back and remeasure that sori, 0.7 doesn't sound right to me either. As to the leather, it's very tightly wrapped and wrapped well. I can't say about handling so much right now since I've been traveling so much I'm barely in town for a day or two before flying out again. But so far it seems to be top quality and feels well in the hand. Thanks Larry - I would try and make room for one of these if I were you Thanks everyone for the comments so far and questions - I'm waiting for the new sageo to get here before taking more pictures. But you'll have them soon hopefully once I can settle down a bit. You can always reach me, as usual, with any questions or thoughts you might have, or post here. Take care, guys. Dan

Try taking pictures with different light sources, sunlight helps a lot too. Not to steal your thread: Heres one with light from the sunset

Yeah, good suggestions. I've tried w/ 4 different light sources in the room from different angles. What you're seeing is the best of those experiments. The problem is that I want to take really great pictures of the activity in the blade on a micro scale. If you look at your picture, also, you'll notice there's a lot of glare coming off the blade on most of the focus of the pic, and you can tell the pattern of the hamon but not its closer characteristics, and that's what I'm looking to capture. Check out the RDS pics of a few of their blades, and in general high quality aoi-art, etc, pics. I have a feeling I'm just asking too much of my limited camera and "studio." I can't take it when I have a TV or piece of furniture in the background The anal retention strikes again

Update - I received my replacement Sageo in the mail today. If you recall, I had asked for black and white sageo but my sword had been finished in black chemical sageo - standard fare, but not black/white. Jason promised me that he would send me a replacement black/white at the end of the month. It arrived today. I was expecting black and white chemical silk, like this: And what I received was black/white SILK KORAI SAGEO. The cheapest I can find this for at Yamato Budogu is around $100 USD. I have had my eye on it in the past, but I never dreamed he would send me this - and I haven't been able to ever find it in black and white. Sageo of this grade is unheard of for katana under $1000 - something like 99% of them are finished with the universal chemical silk. You can imagine how blown away I was to open the envelope and find this. I forgot to add - ZERO COST TO ME. No shipping, no replacement fee, no sending my old black sageo back. Spent the morning taking some pics for you guys. I hope you enjoy (I am aware I tied it with an extra loop on both sides - the length of the cord dictated it): I can't say enough about the level of customer service I have received with Red Dragonfly Sword Art. I have never been hassled about a change, I have never been disappointed with the quality of work on ANY aspect of the katana made for me, and I have never seen the dedication to producing such a high level of finish that I have with RDS for what amounted to about the price of a Hanwei Tiger or Tori. I am still blown away. If you are one of the people graduating up from the $300 market to something higher as I was, I strongly recommend you buy from them. So many reviews for production katana of every level describe fit and finish on certain aspects of their katana as "good for the price," or "what can you expect for this price." That does not apply here. I expected solid work, and hoped for a good piece. What I got was this - the pictures speak for themselves.

Wow that is one of the coolest looking sageos I've seen looks great on the sword. If I had money I'd pick up a Red dragonfly katana, I'll have to ask if they do any shobu zukuri blades.

Thanks guys for the compliments. It's really awesome when good work comes together. Shadow - give it time, it'll grow on you Frammenti - they do make shobu zukuri blades. In fact, I asked for the furniture off of one of their out of stock production blades (look for it on their site under out of stock). My next one I want to get a shobu as well.
