Hey guys (and girls ) Thanks to Temril, I've discovered a French swordsmith who does fantastic work. And, he's also a great guy, answering all my questions politely and giving away his time to a total stranger. I've decided to thank him by giving him a bit of publicity on the forum (with his consent). Who knows, maybe he'll make a sell through here. His stuff is pretty high end, but hey, you never know! This is his internet site www.elfic.fr/ Here are some videos of him working www.youtube.com/user/gregdelaunay#p/a/u/0/RSJHV2WAbIkThis guy is really talented. Federico

There's a whole lot of naked going on there.
Blades are interesting, too.

His video on blade forging was very interesting - I didn't know about the "normalization" portion

Wow...talk about intricate. I like it; but I suspect its a little too rich for my blood at this point; will keep him in mind, though.

Yeah, he is good! I've seen his Elf sword somewhere on SBG and was blown away! I love to get something he made, anything! I wish! If wishes were fishes.

Federico you get a +1 for this. Not just cos it's a cool link to a cool artist. (I was the one who posted his Elf sword on the sword porn thread.)
No you get a Karma for redirecting me to his site this morning, and serendipedously as it happens I was to start a sculpt today of a mermaid, carved into a block of blackwood for an athame, which I'm not experienced at. But one of his knives served as a great inspiration for the piece. Wish me luck that I do alright on my mermaid.

Is it possible for someone to have too much talent? Any idea what his work sells for? I'm guessing multiple thousand $$ for something like that Elf sword shown in the video. I am astonished that it is so completely hand made. With the exception of an automatic hammer and some belt sander work, it appears to be all sweat and muscle, just like hundreds of years ago! ;D

Having seen the intricacies of what my dad does I have a great respect for people who do things like this or any type of sculpture they have my respect. I used to do sculpting and the intricacies can have you pulling your hair out. This man's work would be worth every penny.

Yeah guys, and not only he's talented, but he's very cool. I bothered him with my noob questions and he answered everything. I do wonder how much his stuff goes for, but I don't know if it's appropriate for me to ask him since my finances are low right now. Good luck on the mermaid, and if you can, keep us posted on how it goes. I love seeing an artist at work. Federico

The guy definately has talent, though his stuff is a little too flashy for my personal taste.

Federico / Luna It's my first sculpture, and I'm doing it into hardwood. That same purpley blackwood that I used on Seanoir and Starlust. It's scary that I cant repalce any stock I remove. So I don't have very high hopes for perfection. It's the face that scares me, being little and detailed. But the client is happy for it to look rustic and real handmade, so he'll forgive me if it's a little rough. This is the shape I'm going for. I have scribed the outline onto the block. I will cut out the silhouette and then work on the 3rd dimension. Keep ya posted...

Ahhh naked mermaid! This seems promising! I know nothing of wood, but it looks like the "grain" is all going in one direction. Does that make it easier to work?

It should be easier with a straight grain, though I probably wont do alot of stuff with chisels. I figured I have spent so much time staring at lovely naked ladies that it should be an easy first project. ;D
