I just ordered RtB last weekend. Looking forward to it after reading this thread.
I agree that there is a very big misconception about medieval europe. Particularly with regards to the so called dark ages. Some of the things I've learned recently tells me that they were a lot more advanced than we give them credit for.
To give a couple of examples:
Armor. A well made suit of armor did not weigh the knight down in any significant way (except for the ventilation issue) and it did very well at protecting.
Castle construction. From a combat perspective there some sophisticated features about castles. Like with the arrow slits designed so that if properly manned there was no part of the field an arrow couldn't reach.
Hell, a lot of people think a bastard sword weighs 15-20 lbs.

So is RtB worth buying? Did you actually learn something from it? Alotta bullsemprini, not enough talking with swordmakers, or editing the crap out of the relevant info.

Stop being such a sugar-coating politically correct namby-pamby. Tell us your true feelings. I'm not in agreement on the bullsemprini perspective. But I agree with others that it's a good intro for newbies who want to get a fast leg up on the learning of the basics of the western sword in particular. Knowing what I know now, I would still make the purchase decision. But then it only cost me about $20 total.

It is entertaining, just not very informative. It was not what I was expecting it to be. I thought they should have talked to more makers, instead of actors.

I was actually expecting quite a bit more, what with all the hype. I initially expected it to be geared more toward the serious student of all things sword-related. I was a little let down when I first saw it. But when I sat back and thought about it, I saw how something like that would have such a narrow market that it would probably be a sure money-loser. So I have to cut 'em some slack and understand that they have to make something that will have wide appeal. Still, after watching it 3-4 times I've decided that there are 4 or 5 segments that make it worth the price I paid.

I have no buyer's remorse either, it satisfies that"damn-i-want-to-watch-something-that-is-about-swords" urge.
I think if someone made a documentary on the actual history and craft of swordmaking in the european traditions as opposed to the weekly show on the history channel on japanese swords, it would have a great audience.

Allow me to add another resounding vote for the awesomeness that is Reclaiming The Blade. It has not only been based on research, but includes segments from notable names like Hank Reinhardt and Paul Champagne, both now deceased and taking with them invaluable knowledge of swords with them. Plus, the two disc set has that bonus disc with the awesome extras. I bought it ten minutes after coming to the forum, it came so highly recommended.

not that I regret it, but I love how this conversation has turned from one about false sword documentaries to one about RtB...

Well, I got RtB in the mail today and just finished watching the main dvd. I thought it was good - even in the things I'm really interested in I find it hard to sit and watch documentaries. Reading books is easier for me than that, but I didn't have a problem sitting and watching this one. I thought some of the demonstrations they showed of some of the techniques were cool - enough to renew my disappointment that there doesn't seem to be a WMA group within a 90 minute drive of me. Let me tell you, that is frustrating. So I agree with Sam that I wish there was more depth to the show. I felt as if they skimmed the surface of a lot of things in an effort to hit as much as they possibly could. I felt there was a lot of substance but not much depth, if that makes sense. I would have liked to see more about Oakeshott and his typologies and about swordmaking, and a little more discussion about some of the different styles. My .02

Sam: It is kinda the dvd for "just something with serious blades in it ..... because I dont want to have to reach for my Clive Owen "Historical" King Arthur" ....... Chuck: I know about Hank (It was great to see a bunch of Hank talking) But Paul Champagne's dead I didnt know that what happened to him
