www.crossbows.net/For those of you who ever played the old Ultima series of CRPG, David Watson is the real life inspiration for the character of IOLO. He also makes modern replica working crossbows!!! Awesome! Bookmarked! I'd need to be desperate to DIY when a call to him will give me exactly what I want.

I myself have often messed with the idea of building a bracer-mounted miniature crossbow, like the one seen in the movie Dune. My main issue is a lack of small bendy material with which to build a prod (the bow bit).

I was back at the Kansas City Renfest this weekend and spoke to the crossbow maker again that I mentioned on the first page. This time I left with his contact info, and left him one of my biz cards. I'll share his contact info with anyone iterested as soon as he decides he's ready to start fielding inquiries. Edit: Greg just emailed me, and would love to hear form anyone interested in his crossbows. A couple of details about his crossbows: He uses a Delrin roller release (nut) and attaches the prod to the stock using rawhide. I've asked him for photos. Lik a dummy, I was so busy drooling over his display that I never snapped a single photo!

Just a little update here: It looks like I may have fell into a deal. Seems Greg doesn't want to sell me a crossbow...... He'd rather trade me for some product photography of his crossbows! ;D So, even though I accidentally posted this thread in the Reviews forum originally, I may yet get to change it into a full review!

What a sweet deal! Hope it works out for both of you. Are you close enough to visit his shop? Some "in progress" pictures would be great for his display and website. And to post here of course.

And to post here of course. yis, K The deal is struck! 135 lb draw. Flemish design, Walnut stock! similar to this one, except with rawhide fastenings on the prod. Gary will be bringing his products down here for me to photograph sometime after the first of the year. I encouraged him to bring lots of parts & pieces as well as finished crossbows. He wanted to do a location shoot using a model, but it's the wrong time of year. Maybe next spring...

At KCRF he only had a couple of finished crossbows for display, and parts of another. The photos I will be taking are for him to use in building a website, so we may not see a price list until then. If you want to contact him and ask about pricing, it's Greg Sturgeon - greger2007@hotmail.com

I've jut sent in an order for a David Watson New world Arbalest... German Sporter #5B on his site... I debated back and forth for draw weight between the 70# aluminum and the lightest 125# steel prod... went for the 70# and I hope it's "enough" (the site said long distance target shooting over 75 yards is better with the 125# and I probably won't be shooting over 50 yards I have another, I bought it about 15 years ago... I got it through an armor catalog so I don't even know who made it, but the features do look a lot like the NWA bows... I have some bolts that I made, and they turned out pretty good learned a couple things making and then shooting them: the taper of the nocks should be JUST long enough down the shaft, and don't fletch straw colored shafts with leaf and grass colored fletching if you are going to be shooting outdoors...

I've just made some new bolts using 11/38 port orford cedar shafts, but it's been too cold to go out and try them. the first batch were with dowels from the hardware store, and most of them fly pretty well (two just went completely wonky, but I've got theories why they are so borked).
the fletching I did in typical three feather configuration (typical for regular arrows), but the new batch is half done as two feather and half done as modified three feather (right angles to each other)
