Greetings all... A friend of mine is going to have a Renaissance Themed Wedding... and he wants to have himself and his 4 groomsmen ware daggers during the ceremony, after which they will all keep said dagger as a wedding present. He is looking to spend about $50 per. Since my friends know I have a large sword collection (which is displayed in my poker room, where most have them have been found losing money to me, which goes to buy more swords... Muhahahah!!!) he asked me to help him find something for him. He has caused me some distress by flip-flopping about on the theme/timeframe... having gone everywhere from Medieval to late 18th century. I believe now we are looking at early Renaissance/15th century timeframe... but the daggers need not match the time period. They need to fit the following profile: 1. Be functional, not display crap. 2. Be around 50 dollars each. 3. Be attractive (Subjective, I know.) 4. Be at least somewhat sizeable... 15 in to 20 in or so... so that when worn they are somewhat prominent. I have reached out to some of my 'contacts' but have not got any word as of yet... there is not alot in that price range I'm liking much. Get in the 80 - 120 price range and there are some great options... but around 50 very little. I'm trying to keep him away from the Deepeeka stuff because, well, I have little to no faith in their stuff... he likes them because they have options in his price range that are decent looking. Any ideas suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you find one Deepeka thats it alright, then redo it to make it better, thats all I can say, $50 per is kinda making it hard to come up with any thing other than stainless and a wall hanger.....SanMarc.

Indeed it is... I tried telling him just 30 dollars more per dagger gives us a LOT of other better options... but I guess he is a cheap bastered. ;D

The only dagger I can comfortably recommend is Gen2's 12th Century/Norman model, which I happen to own a refinished version of, and it is my BEST "big knife." Beats my kukri, even, and puts my Windlass Viking Dirk to shame. Of course, my Valiant Co. Bosnian gives it a good run, but that one being a $200 knife I certainly hope it would. Granted, all the others are about the $80 range, save the kukri, which I traded for $30. Perhaps the Windlass Feasting Dagger? It's on the short side, but it's $50. www.kultofathena.com/product~item~402630~name~Feasting+Dagger.htmI'm still looking. (lots of options at the $70 mark... )

I noticed the Windlass Feasting Dagger... it's one of the few viable options at around 50, but sadly will not be sharp at that price.

Sharpen it yourself.

Sharpen it yourself. Indeed... He has no weapons and has never sharpened anything, so I would have to sharpen 5 daggers, for free... not something I would look forward to.

Oh, come on, man; it's for your buddy, who's getting married! At least do SOMETHING that will make him happy despite his new circumstances. ...er... Eh, break out the belt grinder and a faucet.

I REALLY gotta get a belt grinder/sander... then it wouldn't be so bad. I do all my sharpening now with stones.

I've been looking like the rest and it sure looks like he will have a problem finding a "functional" dagger in his $50 price range. Maybe something like the Windlass Qama - $36 at Swords of Honor and "functional". Maybe add some gaudy brass decorations and pretend it's a Renaissance dagger. www.swordsofhonor.com/qama.html

I'm just gonna throw this out there.....does your friend have any scottish ancestry? If so, perhaps a dirk. Decent functional dirks can be found somewhat cheap. Or, since its a gathering, maybe a medieval table knife. www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/Medieval_Table_Knife_Bone_Handle_AH-3294-BNc.html not sure about the maker of the table knife, but I think its a novel idea. Oh, and since this is a dagger, is high carbon a must or will he settle for stainless steel? I know, I know, its stainless steel; but given that these are to be given to groomsmen, and knowing that they will most likely be handled alot and cleaned a little, is that so much of a leap? Plus, it'll lower the cost by a whooole lot.

I could have sworn he had some Scot in him, but apparently not. As for the Stainless Steel... I dunno. If the blade is short enough maybe, but I'd still want it to have a good solid tang and be sturdy and functional... and more often then not the stainless steel ones are not made very well in the mounting.

Yeah, I thought about that after I posted it. Its not that bad to have a short stainless blade, but its the hilt assembly that comes with it that sucks. What kind of ancestry does he have? That might be important. Then again, it might not. $50 for a good functional dagger, thats is a hard one. Is it a possiblity to contact a local smith to make to daggers? Something plain and simple but very damned functional. Actually I have an idea.....

Dude, the qama by Windlass---it is a totally functional short sword, it has presence, it has gravitas, it's cheap as dirt. On a dollar for dollar scale, it is far and away the finest value sword I own. It is vaguely Roman, with overtures of Persia and the Caucasus, it's a cutting sunofagun, it's full tang, it's pretty, it's subtle, it's brutal, it's all of that and a bag of chips. (Well, for those of us who are more paleo/primal, it's a bag of elk jerkey!)

I just got one last week and I concur-Best bang for the buck by far! Makes a dirk look insignificant.

The Qama looks like a great weapon for the money... I might pick one up for myself at some point... but it does not really fit the theme of the wedding, and it's not very attractive either.

A couple of those look very nice, ichiban, but I have no experince with that vendor/maker. Have you bought weapons from them before? What was your impression?

No experience at all, but they seem fair for the price. Shoot them a mail, there is no data for the steel type for the last two, or if they are sharp.
Seen them mentioned from time to time here.
EDIT: They are made by Deepeeka, which you wanted to avoid.
