I have this sword! It is likely the last Windlass I get- at least for the interim, you never know what they might come out with- but as far as last looks go, I can't think of any other sword that'll be as eye catching as this one.
I agree with your entire review for the most part- I opted to leave mine unsharpened as I have plans to use with a kit so it'll be carried.
Now, all that's left is to get a scabbard and belt made for it, and a rewrap. I like the risers, but not the raised 'button' sections- and I want it in a brown/dark brown setup. Because of your review, though, I went for it.
Good lookin out, Chris!

Thank you EP! It makes me glad that I could help.
You must post pictures of it when you are done.

Terrific review. Told me everything I needed to know to be an informed customer. I'm currently saving up for my first "real" sword, to keep peace in the house and with Christmas coming I've agreed with my wife I'll only put aside a little bit each month for "The Sword Fund" and it occurs to me I could maybe get one of these a lot sooner and have something to practice with while I wait to afford that Atrim or what have you. I could do a lot worse, obviously. Food for thought...you've kicked my rusty mental gears into motion, have some karma on me! Oh, and as for the blade type, it looks to me like (sticking with the fantasy angle) Some elves got hold of a grosse messer/falchion and decided it was an all right sword but needed to be prettied up a little.

Ya perhaps if a person gets one it would be better to leave it unsharpened. Save the $18 and sharpen it yourself the way you want it. Anyone have any idea what kind of steel is used? I didn't see anything on KoA site.

I believe that Windlass uses 1060 for all of their bladed weapons. I may be incorrect, but that's what I've heard. GREAT review, btw! I plan on getting this sword a few purchases down the road... I can't wait! ;D Thanks and +1 for the awesome review, man. -Slayer

Windlass uses a variety of high carbon steels including 1095 and 1085. They do not always list the steel content of their swords; I would presume that if the steel is not disclosed it is probably a 1050 or 1060.

I have found more often then not they use 1060 and 1095... but they do also use 1050 and 1085 as pogo says.

Is there a chart somewhere that will let me see the difference between those steels?
