Hello SBG Forum, I have read your sites routinely and joined to learn about what constitutes a suitable sword. Recently, I have been searching for Chinese Swords such as Dadaos, and have found this at www.trueswords.com/hand-forged-warrior-sword-naginata-thick-blade-p-3184.htmlDoes anyone know about or own this sword? Would it be suitable for a durable cutter and weapon of frequent use? I attempted to search for reviews or mention on this site, but couldn't because this sword does not have a common name; it is referred to as a naginata, a pudao, a sword, etc... Thanks.

Don't know anything about it, but at that price, heck why not pick it up and give us a review.

Yeah, I'm really interested in grabbing one. I was hoping that someone here bought one as well to see what it could handle; plastic bottles will be the main targets, but there'll be times when it might have to cut some weeds, light brush, or unwelcomed coyotes during evening... I think there are three variations of the blade of this weapon: the "dadao" type blade, a curved "naginata" or broadsword type, and another one that has a rounded blade continuation rather than a sharp tip:

Still doesn't tell us much about the manufacturer. But the second is more of a pudao than naginata, the ox tail style blade is cool.

Bud K??? my expectations have now dropped considerably. If the blades don't shatter or become flying helicopters of death I would call that good for something that comes from Bud K.
Thanks for letting us know who the manufacturer is, useful information.

LOL @ LP
DOn't count'm out just yet...I hear the Shinwa blades are just the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality, but they are supposed to be 'real'. In time, they'll most likely get better...but its funny, those Shinwas look suspiciously like the 440 SS 'authentically constructed' swords from a few months back.

They annoyingly do, but only time will tell if Shinwa pulls their proverbial head out of their proverbial **** and begins to make a quality product. The listing at trueswords didn't say what type of steel had been used.

When they don't tell you, I automatically assume it isn't tempered, hi-carbon steel; if it were, you know they'd make reference to it at least twice in an ad like theirs.

True, though most of my sword drooling goes to Fableblades and Zong Zheng Wu so I'm not as familiar as some with sites like trueswords and strongblade. However wiwingti has a killer price on the Hanwei scimitar I'm wanting for my wife, so I have been buzzing around Marc's site a bit more lately.
But yeah, if it was properly tempered carbon steel trueswords would be really pushing that aspect.

It's a wallhanger? That's terrible... The pics claim that it's heat-treated, but it could be all false. I'm thinking about doing extensive review and testing with it, but I wouldn't want it to break, or turn into a makeshift shuriken... Maybe I can ask Trueswords to help work out something so that I can help the popularity of the sword if it's real, but can still send it back if it's junk...?

I'm with you there on the Euro tip; as for Strongblade, I've heard good things- up and coming so you'll want to keep an eye on them. I like their Warspike; Daniel (Sept) reviewed one.

I'll have to keep peeking at strongblade then. But currently, I'm still saving up money to make my order from Garret for the custom ox tail dao I want and I'm making arrangements with Brenno for getting a gift for my wife. So I'm kinda maxed out on sword/knife buys at the moment.

Kid-made. LOL

G'day Y'all!
I just saw this thread and thought I should chip in. I bought one of these with the ox-tail type blade a while back when Global Gear were offering them on special. I only had it a short while as it got stolen when my shed was broken into- I had it in there for sharpening. I didn't get a chance to cut with it- the edge it came with wasn't up to it- but I did give it a good examination.
The blade seems decently tempered. It sprang back to true after I bent it by hand to the limit of my strength. No idea how hard it might be- sharpening was going to give me some idea of that. It did have a considerable distal taper, which surprised me given the price, and it showed all the signs of being forged- the blackened surface is slightly rough and hammer-marked. The balance was excellent- POB just behind the disc guard. The haft was hardwood, a bit rough but not at all uncomfortable, and the pommel-ring seemed to indicate that the tang went the full distance (no way of telling for sure without an x-ray or cutting the haft off). The wrap was pretty ordinary black cotton, held in place with glue.
My one concern was that with such a long haft the forces generated in cutting might cause splits in the wood at the junction with the blade. I was considering adding some reinforcement there- maybe wire wrap and epoxy? I was also thinking of cutting it down and rehilting it as a single handed dao. The blade seemed quite sturdy, if rough.
I can't vouch that these things can stand up to cutting, since I never got to try mine, but I was going to give it a shot. Hope that helps...
Cheers

^Ah, thanks. Have you ever taken the wood handle?
I guess they could still be fully functional; maybe they're serious about the 3 types rather than just for looks...?
If I get one, I'll probably take off the handle pins and see how the tang is like. If anyone's planning on getting one or has one, let me know. Thanks.

On mine the pins were immovable, and I'm sure they were glued in, and the haft was of two pieces glued around the tang. Not meant to be taken apart! You'd have to destroy the haft to disassemble it. For the price, I think it's worth a shot. If Global Gear ever have them on sale again, I'll probably get another one.
Cheers
