That's a great tuturial Ichi, and greatly appreciated. Helps make it much clearer for us total beginners. Would it be a good idea, if I picked up a spare tuska, like a Cheness one, to practice? I could take it apart and practice rewraping it, over and over. I was just thinking that way I had a tsuka core, fittings and ito all there for me use.

That's a good idea, yes. You could probably gain from getting some good ito too instead of the shoelace, the different materials behave in different ways.

I really like the tutorial. It is givin me an idea for a project of my own coming up. I dont want a jian with plain wood handle, nor the japanese style wrap. I like the, I think you called it, tsunami style.
I reckon i could get some practice and come up with a design of my own after seeing this. THANKS DUDE.

VERY nice Ichiban!
We need to get some organization in the Sword customization project area, kind of like what James did for our review section. Organize the DIY threads into a new thread with hyperlinks.
A few more stickies (and this would be an excellent candidate and we won't have a first page anymore. Deb, I'll talk to Paul and see what we can do.

Wow Ichiban! Very nice work my friend! I need to learn how to work the wrap in the two final pictures: I think I should be able to puzzle it out...just need to sit down with something for ito, and a tsuka core. You've done a beautiful job for sure =D. Cris

Ichiban, I do believe you are stealing my designs! /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=16345 Unfortunately, I do not have the time or the finances to make them as nice as you do. ;D

Well, I was a year ahead of you posting those. It's not my designs, it's traditional japanese. It's cotton cord, and cost me next to nothing. Very simple to do to, about half the time of a silk ito wrap. The cotton cord is much stiffer than paracord, that's important when wrapping to get the turns to work against each other to stay in place. Here's the finished tsuka with the wrap, my black shobu: Chris, if you need advice on the wrap, just drop me a PM.

Sorry, missed that. Nothing comes for free, results come from practise and hard work.

A question: I see in the photo that shows the hishigami inserted into the wrap, that half of the hishigami is still exposed. Do you have to maneuver the cross-over wrap so that it, too, is "wrapped around" the hishigami - in other words, how does it fit into the folds of the upper, or cross-over, wrap? I'm a bit confused...

Yup, you fold the second part of the wrap around the edge of the hishigame so that it "floats" inside the wrap. If the hishigame is the correct thickness, the two strands will align in height.

Thanks, Ichiban, for the clarification. Looks like I'll have my work "cut out" for me...
