Good review!! , I had been wondering of those United Black katana for sometime.
The more I look at the blade, it looks like the Ming Dynasty produced " Japanese style blade" that were made during the era when they were facing "Wako" japanese coastal pirates. Back then China did import katana for military use and many those imported ones were also copied or at least influenced the Ming dynasty sabers.
Probably , if they remount the blade with the fittings of the Ming Style saber , it can still claim at least "authencity" of the Ming style saber.

I'm usually not crazy about the whole tribal style, but it nice to see a sword that tries on a contemporary look for once.

I bought the Ikazuchi this summer for my wife, but I cant review it because I already dismantled it and sent the Tsuka to brian at roninswords to get a rewrap and new fittings. It cut pretty good on milk jugs but I had to use some force for 20oz coke bottles. Oh and I sold the original fittings to Shoboshi a few weeks ago. I like alot of what united black has done and Im getting their "ao-doragon" for christmas so expect a review shortly afterwards. Great review thanks for shedding some light on these swords.

johan: Thanks . Hopefully this review will give you some useful insight about UC Black katana, if you consider purchasing one. d2eux: I agree; it looks like the signature was made by a poorly-held dremel with a dull tip. At least he signed it, though . Anders: I had seen several attempts at "modern themed" katana, so I figured it was time to review one to see how it fared. From the review, it held up pretty well. I don't know if anyone has reviewed UC Black's 1060 Yoru yet, but that is another modern-themed one to consider. feanor: Thanks . Even with the new fittings, I still say review the sword. The more we know, the better. Ebon: Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if it would be allowed into any dojos, but it does stand up to 'light' cutting work, and it sets itself apart from the usual katana with the standard traditional Japanese-themed fittings. If you're looking for something different when it comes to your katana, consider the Shikyo. --Edward

Also something that I have not personally seen until this blade: the blade has *two* bo-hi on either side. I assume this is for stylistic purposes, as I'm pretty sure the same light weight could be achieved with just *one* bo-hi. If this is present on an historical blade, someone please show me a picture? Otherwise, from my limited experience I believe this to be a modern construction. (Edit: Per the commentary, the two grooves are 'double so-hi', and there is an historical precedent for this.) Here's one with the futatsuji-bi. And another. The tanto from before had a variation of the futatsuji-bi, called gomabashi-bi that are symbolic of the chopsticks used for ceremonies involving fire. Fudo Myoo related, I guess.

I'm thinking of getting the Shikyo, but converting it to look like a WW2 katana converted to Gunto. I want it to look like this: What do you guys think? Possible? How can I go about doing it?

Ecovolo,
Great review! Well written, clear, funny, and with lots of great pics. It is very cool to see more reviews about companies/swords on which we have so little information. I applaud your risking your hard-earned cash on something that just as easily could have been hideous and dangerous. But you got a nice little cutter that is also a conversation piece due to the modern/tribal fittings! Well done, and thank you for sharing the experience with us.

Every now and then, we have to venture outside our comfort zone of established forges, vendors, etc. and try something new. The risk involved is equally matched by the gain in knowledge, even if it's to say, "Wow, that sword is a *lemon* . I was lucky to find a good piece of steel this time. --Edward

Hi there,
Re: Gunto fittings, those Weaponedge swords are the ones I sell. Right now a couple are being sacrificed for advertising on ebay (although it's in Aus) at $49 each - perfect for parts!
Re: United Black, I got a few of their el - cheapo Flying Dragon (which are 1045) models and am impressed even with them too.
Cheers, Rob

i just purchased one of the united black Dragonfly katanas and will be reviewing it soon Please keep me informed. I love the dragon fly paint job on the saya. I am not a katana kind of guy, but I am a fan of the dragon fly. If it is good as the sword reviewed here, or my Ikazuchi, or the Queen's yoru waki... I want one.

Is it easy to buy some fittings and convert the shikyo into a Kokemusu style sword? Well, I know from disassembly that the sword was pretty solidly constructed; I couldn't see why the blade wouldn't be convertible. I personally have not attempted to change out fittings on the Shikyo, so I am unable to give an educated answer on this. If you successfully convert it, please give a review? --Edward

OK sure thing. Will do. I have ordered a Shikyo and will try to disassemble it and make some measurements before looking for some fittings or koshirae, they call it?

Yeah, they do... Try www.SwordsofMight.com, or www.KultofAthena.com for tsuba, they have a bunch each. I'm sure there are better places, but that's all I know, lol. They also sell 'gear tooth' seppa, and in SOM's case, mekugi. KoA has Cheness-brand habaki, but those may or may not be junk.... HTH, -Slayer EDIT TO INSERT LINKS
