I have a few projects in the works and I am looking for some non bohi blades of good quality. I prefer them to be differentially heat treated with a real hamon. These swords need to be able to withstand some light cutting and I know this is the place to ask! lol
So guys, any suggestions?
Thanks!
Brian

I personally can attest to the quality of Dynasty Forge and the Red Dragonfly. I got pretty good deals on both, but I am sure you can get a great deal from Marc and Wiwingti Sword Supply on a DF, I own a bushi class Shobu and its a beautiful sword and great quality, I have a review done so feel free to look at that as well.

I have owned katanas from musashi, dynasty forge, hanwei, cheness, cold steel, kawashima, masahiro, and even some ebay crap ones.
Out of all of them, the most consistently good ones have been hanwei. Plus, they have this unique "new hanwei katana" smell...quite pleasant in my opinion. Anyone else notice it? It's only with the hanweis, I can just smell a new katana and tell if it's a hanwei or not. My most recent one was my practical plus and I'm very happy with it, you can see my review here on SBG. I say if you want a differentially hardened blade that's razor sharp, go with hanwei. If you want a tough monosteel katana that is through hardened go with dynasty forge. If you want a blade under a 100, go with one of the musashi katanas in the 70-80 range, the 808 series.
If you want pure beaters and don't care about looks, check out cheness and cold steel. Fugly, but tough.

after re reading your original post, differentially hardened with a real hamon...light cutting, yea that's definitely hanwei practical series. The other thing I like about hanwei is their smooth sharpness, some of the other katanas have a sharp but rough feeling edge...hanweis edge is very smooth yet very sharp.

I've had good results with Cheness 9260 and 1060 blades. Consider them as possible resources.

hey if you try ebay this week ive been seeing A LOT of what they are claiming to be " authentic japanese samurai sword ". thats what they say i think, well they most all are made of some kind of folded steel. I shot the seller an email asking if they were full tang because they looked pinned into the tsuka in the photos, well he wrote he didnt understand and had "received them in the countryside", so.. who knows, they look like pretty much the ideal project sword. need lots of work but have good shape about them and some kasaki look beautiful, have a look at em shop.ebay.com/merchant/a.2010

Those "authentic" japanese swords look bodgy to me, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Just my personal opinion.

well i figured any kinda folded steel blade ugly or not as long as you got it for 30 bucks would be SOMETHING and if you look closly at a few a those there might be some junk there you could use a a donor blade, but yeah im not buyin one so i guess you cant ask me, and you for sure cant ask the seller cause he cant speak english. but thay do have rust which is good shows you got carbon steel

I have a joint venture with a partner that have created some first generation choji style hamon with no bo-hi swords and they come with a brocade sword bag, cleaning kit, and sword stand. Check them ouy at Destiny Blade.

It's something in the tsuka, don't know if it's the tsuka core or the tsuka-ito. I love that smell...
