I learn of this new Chinese war sword from thread starting by Xanatoas last month and the picture look very promising .My previous few Da Dao (aka Chinese war sword, Chinese battle sword , Chinese Great sword ) come with few quirks here and there but are all fixable so this one is more or less my conclusion of the search for perfect da dao of 2008 . I read the specification of this sword from SOW and learn that it weight hefty 4 pounds !! so I contact Jason and he confirmed that the spec is correct .My previous Da Doa weight in around 2½ to 3½ pounds and I find that anything approach 3 pounds will be too heavy but I decide to get it anyway. Sword of Might ship this item very fast and I recieve the package with in a week
The foam padding protected the blade and restricted the movement during transit so no damage can occure, oh by the way that a box inside a shipping box -never be too careful about shipping stuff.
Sword itself was wrap in plastic with preservative oil cover the blade
The sword and sheath look very impressive and just stare at it for a moment I could imagine the sound of signalling drum and shout warning of enemy approaching and I better get myself some cover before the arrow rain on my back
The blade
The blade is 26½ inches long and 4 inches at the widest part and it is a bit longer than Cold steel Chinese battle sword .It does not come with the eye like other da doa
compare that to Coldsteel sword , this sword is pointier and wider
side by side compare to Cold steel battle sword and Truesword da dao .This sword is longest and heaviest of the trio .Notice too that the scabbard are similar in style
The grip and pommel
The grip is 13 inches long (including the ring pommel ) and it wrap in Japanese style ito wrap which is out of place for Chinese dao but it is sure look pretty and it give good traction .
[/img]
the grip is much thicker than cold steel version . There is fake same cover the grip which I think is out of place for this da doa
The grip wrap is more secure than True sword da doa grip wrap
i252.photobucket"]
The end of the wrap come loose but I loop them around the ring and they are secure .
The guard
This dao come with S shape guard that is substantially thick and it mount solid in place .The guard is about the same size and shape with Cold steel
The thick flat shape guard look more pretty than the round steel type of the True sword dao but both work well
Scabbard
Scabbard is nice soft leather like material with 4 snap closure and black and brown trim but the tip of the scabbard get bend easily if I rest the dao with its edge down too long so I have to mount this dao on the wall or rest it on the body
Specification
Weight : 4 pounds
Blade lenght : 26½ inches
handle with ring pommel :13 inches
OAL :39½ inches
POB: 6 inches from the guard
POC :16 inches from the guard
Cutting test
As much I like Da dao I know that majority of them come with machine sharp edge because most of the forge spend more time sharpening their katana which are their hot seller and put all this da doa in the back of factory corner waiting for apprentics and trainees to sharp them so I am not surprise that my brand new war sword could not cut through the small bottle . It did okay against big 1 gallon milk and water jug .I appolgized for the poor lighing in my garage but this add the authentic to the test 'cause the Chinese military like to fight at night
After cutting down the milk jug my Da doa turn the cutting session in to baseball practice
I sharpen the blade and the doa can cut little plastic bottle
The last cutting video against the small plastic bottle .The one that I cut in half make nice "ping " sound the one that don't fly and crash into the garage door but I sense the potential of this sword
The 1 gallon milk and water jug were cut cleanly but the little plastic bottle were more or less rip apart .I need spend more time sharpening this blade .
Scoring
Historical accuracy : 3/5 (missing eye , Japanese style handle wrapping )
Fit and Finish: 4/5
Handling :3/5 (it just too heavy -the handle can be thinner to trim off some weight )
Structural stability : 5/5 nothing loose on this one
Value for the money : 4/5
Overal value :4/5
Pro - Very beautiful and impressive looking Da Dao
- It come with very nice leather scabbard
- good craftmanship
- The heft and balance make an excellent training tool to build up strength and speed
- affordable price
Con- The factory edge come dull and it can hardly cut soft plastic bottle
- The blade is very heavy so it can not be use for extend cutting session
- resharpening the blade require lot of work so it is not a good sword for beginner .
Bottom line : I would not recommend this sword for some one who plan a lot of cutting with it or some one who has yet to learn how to sharpen a sword. Its excess weight also tend to cause overpower during the swing so it is not good sword for beginner who has yet to learn how to judge speed and timing and control of the blade. It is , however, make an excellent display piece and good conversation starter for the house guest .
