Strider Knife by Scorpion Bows and Knifes
Alright, so since someone asked me for this last week (I think) I finally got to work . I wanted this knife/dagger for a while, not only because it is a functional LOTR piece (tough to find these days...) and because it is attractive on its own, but most importantly because this is not a production piece, but an individually made knife and Chris did a fine job on this one.
Total length: 20 in
Blade length: 14 in
Blade width: 2 1/8 in
Blade thickness: 3/16 in
Handle length: 6 in
POB: 2 in from guard
CoP: lol... stiff troughout, so anywhere in the blade
Weight: 1 lb 3 oz
Metal: 5160 Spring steel tempered to Rockwell 53
Handle wood: Tiger Maple
The Blade
it's pretty close to the movie prop, I personally like it a lot on its own accord as well as the fact that it is a LOTR piece (but I already said that). It came paper-cutting sharp right out of the box and I love it. It cuts cardboard very well (just ask its box if you don't believe me). Other than that though, I have not taken it up against any other foe (except my jacket, which it killed as a result of friendly fire ) but it does not look as the kind of knife that would have any problem with anything. I might take it for a spin soon, if I do, I will record (hopefully) or at least give a report on the matter. It came etched on both sides with "Gud Daedheloth" in elven script, which is what Aragorn's knife is supposed to have as well as a floral design in the lower part of the blade, they both look sweet.
Etching
and the floral design
The blade geometry is a hexagonal until the widest point and then turns to pentagonal. All in all, it's a sweet blade, the only impurity with this blade is a problem on the unsharp side of the knife, near the tip:
as you can see the design in one side of the blade is different from the other at the place where the "bevel" ends, but that is negligible and very small overall.
The Handle
Tiger maple and pretty attractive to my eyes. It is highly polished and feels pretty comfortable in hand. It fits my hand well and is not too thin or too thick. It is attached to the tang of the blade by hidden pins and epoxied just for extra safety. I have a problem in general with epoxy, but I can live with this because it is NOT the means by which the handle is attached to the tang. The tang goes all through the handle and just ends, no pommel unlike the United Cutlery version, but I see it as more attractive this way.
The Sheath
It's leather only, so I am not too crazy about it, but compared with the rest of the package it's alright. It is hand-stiched pretty tightly, disregard some of the cut thread, those were some of my failed attempts to sheath the blade... I asked Chris to make a belt loop on mine, so there it is. It fits incely into my belt, but I would recommend that if you want a quick draw you hand it diagonally, or otherwise put it this way behind your blade, so you can reach back with your left hand to draw it. It fits pretty well into the blade and does not fall even if you turn it 180 degrees so the handle is perpendicular to the ground.
Handling
This is a pretty strong blade and a quick-handler. One thing that I find very attractive is the "whoosh" sound it makes, so I really love to waive it around. It cuts cardboard pretty well and has a deadly thrust. It easily goes in all the way through the widest part of the blade without much effort and the shape of the blade makes for a very painful wound, believe me, I got stabbed by it once when I mis-sheathed the sword... it was pretty painful the day after and it's still not completely closed because once it goes in, the very tip turns and causes and internal wound so that makes the overall wound the more painful.
Overall Impressions
Pros:
Not a production piece
Paper-cutting sharp
Strong overall
Handels quickly
Cons:
problem with the unsharp part of the blade
Sheath is leather only, would have preferred a wooden core
All in all, I would buy this knife again in a second and I recommend it to everyone, especially now that it is on sale. It has a special place in my collection and in my heart.
