Well I finally got time to snap a few pics of my axes. I posted this on another forum, I figured I'd post'em here while I was at it. The first one is a pic of my whole collection as it is now, taken on my fire place. The first axe is my hanwei. This axe is kinda growing on me, though I still don't like the handle. The next is a cold steel rifleman axe with the Knot cut off the back. I've had this axe for over 15yrs, and it shows the age, This one is actually my fathers. My brother and I bought it as a birthday present several years ago. It kinda just migrated to my house and never left. Shes the one I use in all competitions, and shes never let me down. I wish I knew the maker, so if any of you guys with great google-fu wanna take a shot at finding the manufacturer, theres a karma in it for ya. O.k, these next few are all Allan axes. This one is called "old reliable". It's the most used axe at the black powder rendevouz in friendship, In. I shaped the handle down to fit all the way in the eye in order to utilize the whole length. This is Allans' "Bleeding Heart". I recently got this and another one from my cousin, who is a fellow thrower. This is Allans' viking belt axe. When I throw this one, I let it over rotate a little. It strikes the target better IMO. Alllllright. This last one is my pet monster. It was made by my neighbor as a wedding present. Get it? A battleaxe for marrying a battle axe. He was just joking of course. This beast weighs right at 5 pounds, and I have split whole targets with it. The handle is 1" pipe thats been heat treated. There's weld beads loose in the handle, so it kinda sounds like a wind chime when thrown. Ok, to do a quick update.Heres my last, and most wanted Allan axe, the coveted Bearded viking. Now, heres a personal favorite of mine. Not an axe, but still fun to throw. The almost indestructible gunstock war club. This one was made by Stephen D. Liley of Coal Creek Forge. A deadly and beautiful pattern welded ranger axe. Here's a pic of another Hanwei axe. The short beard viking axe is sitting atop my new target. Here's another axe done by C.C.F. A viking throwing axe with the "wobbly O's" pattern weld. I tell ya, Steve can make a helluva axe! This is just of the head, but it takes a standard handle. And here's my set of heay bowie throwing knives Heres the axe that will finish out my Hanwei Viking collection. Just got it today, and can't wait to throw it! Well, thats about it for now, but I'll continue to add to this post as I get more.

All the handles except the hanwei are made from hickory. When the hanwei handle breaks, I'll use either hickory, or given the small eye, persimmon. Persimmon is an incredibly hard wood. Early pioneers made plows from persimmon if they didn't have steel. The problem with persimmion is that it takes 2 years for it to cure, IMO. if you work it before then, it tends to turn or warp. With the unknown axe, that handle is made from the heartwood of a hickory tree cut locally. I try to put my best handles in that one since I use it for competition. I think its my best handle to date.

That's incredible Avery, I have that same unknown tomahawk. It's my most reliable sticker too! If I remember correctly I bought it from The Sharper Image around 15 years ago. The advertising in the add said it was stainless steel but never mentioned a name, liked the looks and the price but after I got it, I loved the ballance... You are the only other person besides my Brother in Law that I've ever known that has one... Even used it in 94 to clinch first place at a rendezvous at WooLaRock near Bartlesville Oklahoma. Won a buffler skull at that one. Liked the dang thing so well I even bought a second hawk just to hang with the skull. That one has never been thrown... Good hawk, just have NO idea who made it... BTW, you have a very nice collection!

Thanks D.B. I didn't even know they had rende's in Ok. back then. Course I don't get out west that often either, Indiana's as far as I go. Judging by the picture you do a bit of blackpowder shoot your self. Looks like a nice possibles bag you have hanging, and is that a skinning knife wrapped in sinew I see, or a cree knife? As for the axe, I'd ask if you want to sell it, but already know the answer. Shes a great head isn't she? The thinness of the blade face is what I think gives her the edge.

Hehe... Use to go to them rende's a lot, when I lived in that area. That's funny too, cause now I live in the Rocky's and have only been to one in the 13 years I've lived here. That knife looks better on the wall then it acts in the hand. It was a blanket prize that I picked, some homemade jobber made from what looks like a saw blade. You guessed it on the Axe. I can't part with it... Sure wished we knew who made them, never saw them for sale anywhere else or ever again. They must have been a venture that didn't work out. Too bad too. Do you remember where you bought yours?

Do you remember where you bought yours? Loch norman Highland Games, April ..... Late 90's. But I saw the same axe on the net last year and didn't bookmark it. I know it's still manufactured by someone, I just don't know who!

That's good at least we know it's still being made. I'm really surprised we don't see it more often. Maybe it's over priced now or made by a very small company, or both... I'll keep a closer eye out for it and if I ever come across it I'll be sure to post it back here. You do the same please, I have a need for another one... Still, you have a very nice collection Avery. Another Tomahawk that is worth of looking at that does not fall into the "olde time criteria" but does fall into the under $300 mark is one made from American Tomahawk called the VTAC. It has a poly (for lack of a better term) handle and is derived from a hawk used during VietNam. The thing is TUFF! the handle is a little short so you have to get a little closer than normal (about a half step) but it's a deadly little thing. It's fun to throw too. It has a hole in the handle for a lanyard and that makes it whistle while it works. (bad pun) Thought I'd throw that one (oh, another bad pun) in there in case your looking to add to your cache. Here is a link to it (note: you can find them cheaper on eBoy); www.americantomahawk.com/products/vtac.htm

Ouch. Don't know if I could have the courage to throw that one or not. Still, they are nice... Heck, I had a hard enough time breaking over to throw my VTAC... Kind of like that first scratch on a new car...
Sure dig the music on that site too... Very appropriate, "last of the Mohican's"

Buy two, throw one. That's what I did with the unnamed one. Of course it was considerably cheaper...
Do you have a block in your back yard?
