Perhaps some manner of saif, which is a generic term for "sword" from the Arabic world, but in some circles will be distinct from shamshir, kilij, talwar, etc.
Couldn't guess on age, though it does seem pretty old. 150+ years, maybe? Seems possibly still more decorative/ceremonial than a combat/fighting sword, but that doesn't mean the quality is poor.
I don't really know enough to say any more, so hopefully someone who does will come along and enlighten us both.

so i seen this at a yard sale and after looking it over I think it's authentic..so I got it. I believe it's authentic because of the blade length is over 21 in. It has a brass pummel or handle that has hand carvings of a bird's head. The reason I believe it was done by hand because both sides are not symmetrical like if it was done with the machine.. also after looking it over I see nothing that stood out to me as modern. I look the blade over very carefully but I see no markings because the blade has been aged and has a slight rust appearance to it that could easily hide the markings if there were some. It also came with a piece of a sheaf that is made out of wood and looks like it was wrapped in either velvet or leather but had deteriorated pretty bad over time. I will be providing pictures below if somebody could give me any information they would have regarding the sword I would highly appreciate it..

With my very limited knowledge I just can say that the hilt has elements of early Hungarian/Avar sabers (grip, pommel, look up the saber of Charlemagne) but also elements of Indian sabers (langets, handguard).

Well, I would say this doesn't qualify as an ancient sword, ancient would be anything before the middle ages. It does look like a shamshir though, which is a relatively modern middle eastern blade. As for its authenticity, it doesn't look like wootz for the blade, to me it looks like carbon steel, and is relatively old, maybe ~100 years. The scabbard is in pretty bad shape. The hilt looks like it's brass, decent workmanship.

I commented on this in the Ancient swords topic. Looks like a shamshir.

Tulwar, Indian, most likely 19th or early 20th century, certainly not much earlier than that. I'll agree with the previous poster, the blade looks like a homogenous steel, not wootz (but I sure could be wrong about that -- need better resolution shots of the blade to double check). Probably not very high value, maybe $500 or so?
