I have two etched wilkinsons, roughly 1845. Anyway I can remove rust/pitting without ruining the etching?

It's not that easy. What I would personally do is thoroughly oil the blade with mineral oil. That will help over time to convert the red rust to black rust, so you don't get continual damage. There is a post here about using EDTA based solutions or gels, and I would think that's your best bet for removal without spoiling the cypher, but you still have to be careful in how you use it!

If you could post a pic, thatd be very helpful. Lets us see what youre dealing with. EDTA hydrogels are great for removing red rust--used it on tools and various conservation projects. Gets into the cracks and crevices amd pits so its good at getting red rust you dont want to/cant mechanically disturb or cant readily get at. Clean and treat immediately afterwards tho so red doesnt build back up. Oil n green dish scrubbies/Good ole steel wool (i have some 0000) and a 3-in-one machine oil (or mineral oil for the purist)and hand buffing--apply oil n let her soak, lightly (with as little pressure as you can) work away at a small area of red rust. You arent looking for large areas to work on. Unless you are going to get into each pit, crevas and valley w toothpicks you will need something like the hydrogel suggested. 1897 conservation
Guard (green scrubbies n oil only)I used scrubbies, cloth, 3in1 and some jewellers polish ( didnt get to mothers mag just yet) in areas of baked on oil/grease. Edta Gel Serial Number Rust Lifting
