I finally found a set of fittings that go with this wakizashi sized tsuba I have, and I just need a blade to tie it all together. Ideally. I'd like to find one in shirasaya if it means saving a bit of money, but there isn't too much to choose from, so I'll probably need to find something with cheap fittings so that more of the price will be spent on the blade. I might do some light cutting, but it will mostly be a looker, so I'd like something in 1095 or T10 that has a pretty Hamon. Right now I'm looking real hard at the Dynasty Forge Bushi Class Silver Dragon, but is that going to give me the best bang for the buck? The Hanwei Practical Plus is also a contender, but the Hamon is kind of bland. I'd like to keep it around $300, but I can go a little higher if it's really special. Any recommendations?

There are more than one possibilities for a waki blade. In your price range, you probably could get Jkoo forge (Sinosword website) to make you a pretty choji T10 blade. You could probably send them your fittings to use for your blade as well. I have a choji mono DH T10 Jkoo waki they made me....it came out nice. RinC

I thought about JKoo, but the last one I got from I wasn't too happy with. The first one was a good deal, but I don't want to be disappointed again.

The eBay seller komonjo www.ebay.com/sch/komonjo/m.html? usually has more old wakizashi blades than anything else, and sells by auctions usually starting at $100 (the better looking waks often wind up around $300-$400). He reloads his stock once a week. All his waks I've seen are nihonto.

Treeslicer knows his stuff and I second his komonjo recommendation. Mind you, the cost of a "build from scratch" tsuka and saya and all the details, etc that go with that route, will likely run cost up. But at least then, you will have a nihonto instead of a Longquan production blade. And if you get a komonjo nihonto in good condition, it may even appreciate in value, unlike the majority of production "replicas". RinC

Yea. I'd like to get a Nihonto, but polishing costs so much, and Komonjo doesn't have anything right now anyway. It's probably going to take a while for the handachi set to get here, so I got some time to figure out what I want to do. I've found a couple of used Waks, but I think I want to go with a brand new one. It's turning into a real project, but them again it always does.Thanks.

Well, for about $300 you could get a pretty good Longquan waki. Have that for your "beater" and practice waki...cut bottles, etc. And start saving for a nihonto. RinC

Ruijin T10 Wakizashi. I used it for daily practice it's been 3 months, the fitness is still tight!

One of these came up on eBay this morning. Search nami wakizashi and it’s first up. $99 starting bid or buy for $150.

I have 4 from Wang-Katana2011. 1095 DH mono katana (2 each) Folded (1095 I think) katana Folded (1095 I think) waki I have used the mono 1095 DH katana for bottle cutting for some years. Tough blade, stays sharp...though have not cut 2X4's or such. Furniture is ok, but a step down from Jkoo/Sino. But for a bare blade, unless methods have changed recently, they have been good blades.
