My Cold Steel Norse Hawk arrived today and straight away I notice that it has this really odd spot of scale right near the edge of the blade. Wondering if I could get opinions - does this look like a structural problem or is it just a cosmetic fluke to be ignored?

Well I went ahead and scraped off most of the paint. Looks fine underneath so I assume there is nothing wrong and it was just a flaw in the application, but I will continue working on the axe and inform if anything becomes apparent.

Definitely keep us informed. Looks like the finish/paint just didn’t stick. Could have been some residual oil that wasn’t cleaned well. To tell you the truth it might look better without that finish. Good luck with it.

Truth be told I am attempting to recreate a weapon from an early 2000's game I love - Rune! A 'hand-axe' was the primary weapon you started with every round and it was often just lobbed away, kind of appropriate for a tomahawk! As you can see, it's featured pretty prominently. If you want to have a go, Rune on GoG, Rune on STEAM. Reccomend GoG though as their version is always more compatable than STEAMS and you get a free download of Rune Gold (the classic unpatched version) and the OST from GoG.

Here it is as it stands this evening. Still planning to work on the blade yet more and to use a roundfile to make channels for the lashing to keep those secure and in place. I also have some iron liquor brewing to further age the haft. The haft soaked in tea for an hour and a half today and the tannins reacted like crazy with the iron filings from the blade and the wood is already a bone gray, likely wont need much encouragement to go even more gray when the iron liquor is done.

Looks better than when new. How long is the haft?

I have a couple Cold Steel bearded axes and their Danish axe and find them to be very good for their price range. I did a review on one here. What you have there is just a cosmetic blemish in the paint, I always remove their finish and blacken the blade myself.

Looks better than when new. How long is the haft? The haf is just a little over half it's original length, I measured 3.5 'hands' from the top of the blade and cut it there to match the approximate length of Ragnar's Axe in Rune. The actual length is now exactly 13" from tip to taper (acompletely happy axe-ident, I assure you) and 10.5" from the bottom of the head where it meets the haft to the heel of the taper. It's most comfortable to grip starting about a half inch up from the start of the taper and I imagine it will throw very handily. At some point CS switched from barrel hafts to teardrop hafts and this one is a teardrop, so it feels great and 'handy' at this length. Here is a comparison of the cut haft to the remaining haft. All I did was soak the remaining haft in tea - it was aged completely by accident when I worked the head a little and the haft was dusted with iron filings. This is all well and good since I am just waiting on the iron liquor to brew for this exact process I leave you with some brilliant concept art of the axes from RUNE!
