After looking at the eye candy that are Albion swords, the Baron and Duke Specifically. Wishing they were in my price range on the side. Anyways these two swords are similar yet very different. One is a cleaving primary while the other is cleaving with a dash of stab ya. I just wanted to get some thoughts from all you folks that are wiser and more knowledgeable than myself. If you could choose one over the other what would be your reason and why?
Thanks for your thoughts and time,
WAR

Most people would agree that XIIa like Baron would be a better choice because it is still monster cutter but handles a bit better and thrusts a bit better. BUT, then there is the question why XIIIa seems to be so much more popular historically than XIIa (based on survived examples and grave stones). Me personally would choose the Duke. And I have a poor man's version of it, Hanwei Tinker GSoW.

I really like my Duke. It was my first Albion. First Euro. The purchase was solely based on my admiration for the style since I was a kid. Oddly enough, for being the largest sword I've owned, with the large handle and pommel it feels the best balanced. Never cut with it though. Not used to anything with such a thin profile and that much flex. I was waiting till I could practice on something similar (and cheaper) first. But with the way things are going I might sell it before I ever get a chance to use it. If I do I will buy another one some day.

You have to ask yourself what it is you're looking for in a sword. If you have no idea, then you're asking for that feeling of regret if you choose the wrong one. Maybe both will do it for you, who know's. But I've handled most of the Albion sword's, and each and every one is a unique experience. Speaking with Mike at Albion recently, he said the Baron is the more popular sword.

Personally I would go the Duke, I really like the XIIIa, that profile in two hands seems very powerfull.

My bias opinion of type XIIIa blades: go for the Duke!

I have the Albion Baron... never had the chance to lay my hands on a Duke. The Baron is a monster cutting sword... but as mentioned still retains some abi9lity to thrust... that versatility makes me think I would prefer the Baron to the Duke... but I can not say for sure having never handled one.

I'd personally choose the baron, because with better thrusting capabilities detailed in the ad copy, it seems more suitable for longswording techniques. Even in my cutters, I want some thrusting ability, and some XII's are good thrusters against unarmored (light) targets. I wish albion would post higher-rez, and more detailed pictures so one could get a feel for the blade geometry etc.

I own the duke. though i have only cut a pinata on my 29th bithday with it. I bought it because I love the simple look of it over the Baron. the blade is stiff enough to stab with. though i think it could use a longer grip like the Baron has.
just my 2 cents.

The Duke has a shorter grip then the Baron? Ugh... I find the grip on the baron a little short for my taste, so the Duke would likely be unusable for me.

i just checked the stats on albions site. I was wrong. both swords have hilts about the same length. though their blades are different.

What could you stab with the Duke? I honestly can't see stabbing anything other then a person in a t shirt, the long flat blade has so much flex. It would be my choice if I wanted to cleave someones arm off, but would be my last choice for stabbing.

The blade is stiffer than it looks. by no means do i think it's better for stabbing than chopping, I'm just saying it is stiff enough to do so.

Well, I dunno about the Duke, but my Baron is pretty stiff for such a large sword, and stabs quite well.

I have 2 Barons and 1 Duke I personally LOVE the Baron as a wicked and quick "WAR SWORD" you just have to experience the balance and feel .... The duke is also a wonderful sword a real cleaver... My vote Baron!!!

Where does the weight difference between the 2 show up? With the profile taper of the Baron and the relative lack of taper with the Duke, I'm having a hard time visualizing where the Baron is holding the extra 11 ounces. I am in possession of several Albions, but have never handled either of these 2. I own the Knight, which has significant distal taper, so I assumed the Baron would be similar, being from the same branch. Is the Duke's distal taper so significant that it trims that much weight in comparison?

14 years...sometimes, dead is better. Hahahahahaha, I was google searching to find an answer and this old thread came up. I've seen some other older threads that keep on going, so I figured I'd try my hand at necromancy and resurrect this one 😅
