I don´t know if this is a review when I have´nt throwed with it but... sort of:
This is the Viking Bearded axe for throwing made by Allen foundry. It´s a replica of an axe found in Gotham on Gotland, not the city Batman lives in but in Gotland which now is a part of Sweden. So, it is made in the U.S. but this particular axe is back in the regions were the original came from. I think the original was from around the 900´s.
I bought it from www.ragweedforge.com. after a tip from our friend avery. Ragweedforge.com is a dealer I can recommend. Very good communication and fast professional handling and shipping. It took about seven days from I ordered until it was here in Sweden.
I don`t have any target for the moment so there are no throwing video or such. I did however a little light chopping for fire sticks this morning. It worked excellent. The balance and weight makes it in my opinion very suitable for that kind of work. I like the weight and the special balance in this axe, and it kind of feels like it wants to be thrown These axes seems to come relatively sharp, compared to what I am used to in axes. You could rather easily cut yourself with it if not careful, at least with this one.
The handle is tapered, no risk that the axe comes lose.
I don´t know if it is hickory or ash in the handle. We don´t have hickory here so I don´t know how it looks. But the spare handle is white, not reddish. My guess is ash on the spare at least. But it´s a guess...
I really like this one. I have´nt found anything yet to complain about. I Can´t wait to begin my throwing exercises.
I´ve measured a few things on it, 1 inch is 25,4 millimeter - 2,54 centimeters. My pocket calculator is eaten by a pup so it comes in centimeters.
Bevel height
- varies, but about 8 mm, 0,8 cm.
Bevel width from corner to corner
. 105 mm - 10,5 cm.
Handle length-
45,5 cm (about 18 inches I guess)
Height of the axe head, from the top to the bevel
18 cm
handle taper
3,5 cm x 2,5 cm - 2,5 x 2 cm on 45,5 cm length
Here are a couple of pictures. the blackened finish is awesome imo. I hope be able to buy more from Allen foundries in the future. There are periods when for example this model and other models from Allen foundrys are out of stock.
This was the weather yesterday. today we have snowstorm and 6" snow.
