My go-to craftsmen is Josiah Boomershine. He can make you pretty much anything that you can think for fitting and then make you a awesome mount.

Thank you so much! I knew that there had to be a supplier out there somewhere.

I'll be mounting two katanas in the near future and I'm looking to get some grade 1 samegawa. The only place I can find on Google is SwordNArmory but they no longer carry it. I emailed them and was told this by their customer service. So was wondering if anyone on here knows of a supplier that sells it.

My thanks for the suggestions. I have recently been in contact with Randy Black, about whom I understand there to be good things said by all. Indeed, he is also an excellent choice.

I have not had any work done by Fred but I did contact him about 5 years ago when I was looking to have my Howard Clark L6 blade polished and mounted. I had asked Fred who would be doing the polishing and he wouldn't share that information with me. Fred outsources to other people to do this kind of work. My guess as to why you have read both good and bad reviews of the work that comes out of his place of business is most likely due to having been completed by different people. I to was in the same spot as you are now just with blade polishing. With not knowing who was going to be working on my blade I couldn't see any photos of their previous work. I didn't like that so I ended up going with someone else. Not sure how much you're looking to spend but I would highly recommend Josiah Boomershine. He is a student of Rick Barrett and is a fantastic bladesmith as well as a fittings and mount maker. You can get a hold of him on FaceBook if you are interested in getting something done by him. Wish you luck in your search.

You can check out Walter Sorrels’ guides here Pt 1 - how to photograph knives Pt 2 - how to photograph a katana Thank you very much for these videos. They helped out a lot. Though I still need a decent camera before I could do this. The only camera I have is my phone and it's lens is broken so all the photos I take with it are blurry. treeslicer Thank you for taking the time to write all that out. I really was amazed at how much of a response I got for asking this question. So thank you again for all your help. Dose anyone have photos of a blade already of Ricks work they might be willing to share with me? If not could anyone recommend a place that can do a full scan of my current blade? Or can recommend a photographer that has the skills to do what Treeslicer talks about in his post?

I have been looking all over google and other search engines with no luck. I have been trying to get a good photo of a full blade of Rick Barretts or simular smith hamons. Something along the lines as this kind of photo www.aoijapan.com/img/sword/kantei/kantei450-2.jpg. Or if someone could recommend to me a good way getting a blade photographed in this way as I have a Rick Barrett blade and I have come nowhere close to being able to get a good photo of the hamon. I have searched for ways of getting good photos of hamons and I have tried doing this but I lack the know-how and a good camera. Any help that people can offer would be very much appreciated.

So my two cents is if your looking just for a cutter Hanwei raptor serious are good. If your looking for something a bit nicer the Bugei 5160 katanas are really nice www.bugei.com/bugei-exclusive-5160-swords-171-ctg.htm. They are pretty tough and look really nice as well. They cost 645 which is close to your spending point. Bugei is also a good company and you know what your going to get. I'd stay away from eBay. You could also look for a sword on here. If I was going to get a sword just to cut with as my first starting katana I'd go with the Bugei dragonfly 5160 katana. Hope this helps and let us know what you end up picking.

Hello, everyone. I would like to hear from people that have owned and or used both of Howard Clarks 1086 and his L6 blades.
The reason why I am asking is that I am about to finally have my L6 blade from Howard finished with being polished. I ordered the sword back in 2008 and it has been a project in the works for the last 9 years. My preferences in blades have changed a lot since I first ordered the sword and I was thinking about selling the blade when I get it back to order a new one to better fit my new preferences. So now I am trying to decide if I want to order a 1086 blade from Howard or another L6. Now I do know that Howard isn't taking any new orders right now so I will be waiting a while for the new one but thought I would ask people there opinion on what they liked better. I would be using the blade for both cutting and Iai if that helps.
A few question for people
What did you like about each one and what one would you pick if you could only have one of them?
From what I understand his 1086 blades hold a better edge of his L6 blades. Can anyone confirm this?
Just how strong are his 1086 blades, has anyone ever bent one of his blades on a bad cut or have seen one of his blades bend?
I know that my sensei has used both of his blades but I haven't been able to talk to him about it as he is out of town for a few weeks. I plan on asking him about it when he gets back but thought I would ask you all your thoughts and opinions on the matter.
thanks for any thoughts, opinions or insights you might be able to give me.
Also if anyone is interested the current blade is a shinogi zukuri with a nagasa of 28.5", sori of 1/2" and a sakihaba of 1" with a chu kissaki. Not really sure of the other measurements as I haven't seen the blade in a long time.
