Buy a basic katana from Hanwei, Dragon King or Huawei and send it over to cottontail customs to modify to your wishes. Or if you’re patient, Michael Sabatier, a French smith, can make an awesome custom sword for 2500€. But the lead time is easily a year. I would highly discourage anyone from ordering from Michael Sabatier. He may be very skilled, but his communication and overall customer service are unacceptable. I referred one if my students to him a few years ago. She paid in advance for a sword that he failed to deliver. No communication. He just took her money. This is reprehensible.

Having a non-refundable deposit policy is one thing. However, taking a customer's money and not delivering a blade as promised is theft. I was lucky enough to receive my blade from Sabatier, but a friend of mine was not. It's been nearly three years now, and Michael Sabatier has failed to make good on his obligation as a craftsman. He has also been unreachable via email. This is completely unacceptable in my book. I would highly discourage anyone from doing business with this smith.

Shobutengu,
I'd rather not post the price publicly, but it really depends on the project. Radovan is a one man operation. He not only forges the blades. He also polishes them and does koshirae work as well. I would highly recommend contacting him for a quote, or even if you just have a question. He is very responsive to emails. As for the type of steel, Radovan uses Bohler K990 carbon steel for his mono-steel blades. Thanks!

Hi, Keshin,
I recently commissioned a mono-steel blade from Radovan. He does fantastic work, and it is very reasonably priced. His communication is also excellent. He completed the blade in a very short time and kept me informed throughout the entire process. His level of craftsmanship is impeccable. I highly recommend him and plan on ordering from him again. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any idea what the approximate prices are for Motohara swords? The koshirae looks really nice on their blades. Thanks! It all depends on the koshirae and steel but the basic version of sks3 (light mat cutter) is around 1.6-1.7k , L6 in general or hard target cutting geometry is around the 1.8k . It’s best if you contact them on their Facebook page. I have their LMC but in o kissaki with handachi fittings in red silk ito and the blade is well, well worth their asking price. Everything is done correctly on their swords . Thanks very much for the info. I would love to see pics of your blade if you don't mind. I am very fond of o-kissaki blades myself 😊.

Would be great if you could share some info on the sword. Not much feedback from Sabatier owners out there. Very nice looking swords. Is the sword for collection and/or training? Do you cut with it? It is a mono-steel blade. It was made for martial arts use. I do intend to cut with it, but I haven't had a chance to mount the blade yet. It took quite a bit of time, but Michael's level of craftsmanship is very high. Here's a link to a pic of the blade from his Instagram page:

I hope to be able to have the sword mounted later this year. There are other pictures of it on Michael's Instagram page as well. Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed reply. Yes, I was able to get in touch with Michael Sabatier. He completed my sword commission last year and I was very pleased with the end result. Thanks.

Greetings!
I was just wondering if anyone here has heard from Michael Sabatier recently? I've had a sword on order from him for quite some time and it's been a while since I've heard from him. If anyone here could let me know I'd appreciate it. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd rather not post. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Win

I've actually seen that DiCristofano blade in person. It's simply a work of art. Do keep us posted on how this turns out. Thanks!
