Hey guys I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'm curious about both the Greatsword from Coldsteel - www.coldsteel.com/twohandedgreat.htmland the Hanwei Lowlander www.kultofathena.com/product~item~PC2065~name~Hanwei+Lowlander+Two+Handed+Great+Sword.htmAs you all probably guessed, I like em big After reading reviews for both of them I've compiled a list of pros and cons. Pro - CS Greatsword Con - CS Greatsword - Sturdy, built like a tank - Shorter than the Lowlander - Decorative handle - Thicker look Hanwei Lowlander Con - Lowlander - Massively long body - Apparent rat - tail tang Of all the features the most striking one for me has gotta be the rumored rat tail tang on the Lowlander. I like many others have had bad experiences with wall hangers and their rat tail tang, fortunately nothing major has happened to me due to such but thats definately something I'm try to avoid. I'd like to have some expert advise on these 2 awesome blades from you guys in terms of power/durability and anything else. Whatever you guys say here can make the difference

I had my eye on the Lowlander for a while too. I read all the reviews and watched all the videos, then decided that the Hanwei Claymore seemed to be built a little better and is the same length as the Cold Steel greatsword( but a pound or so lighter ). Then Wiwingti had it on sale last week for something under $169 or $179 or something. I'll have it in about 2 days. The cold steel looks pretty sturdy but it also looks a bit fantasysword-like.

I'd have to agree with Morpheus that the Hanwei Lowlander is the better buy. While I've never handled either of the two swords in question I have handled several Hanwei katana and I can say that Hanwei consistently produce a very high quality product. As for the tang I wouldn't be too concerned with it - Hanwei European arms are usually made very faithfully to original specs and as such the tang will work just as well as the original did in its day.
The CS sword on the other hand - like Morpheus said - looks like a fantasy sword. Not being one to like fantasy swords all that much I much prefer the more historically accurate Hanwei reproduction. Besides Morpheus also touches on something that I'm sure in the current day and age is very important - PRICE.
CS markets their swords at a pretty high price for what you're actually getting. For the price of 1 CS great sword you can get a Hanwei Lowlander or a Claymore, a Hanwei Buckler and maybe a Practical Katana. More bang for your buck. Normally I'd say go with the more expensive item as more often than not in the sword world you get what you pay for but CS is consistently overpriced.
Just my humble opinion though so take it as you will.

Cold Steel imo is great when they get it right but can be hit-or-miss on swords. I absolutely love my Shamshir, Grosse Messer (if you get one as I did, w/ good QC)--and that's after cutting in earnest for almost 25 years and owning MRLs up through Atrims, A&As and Albions.
That said, there are some real CS sword stinkers. Hilt construction on the H-&-H, of course (too bad since it could've been great) --and the Greatsword. The latter is very strong but far, far too heavy to be in a realistic range.
If you like 'em that big, yeah, go Hanwei. (Though if you don't mind the price CS's Nodachi is quite nice. I'd like to score one of those at a bargain someday and rehilt it Euro style.)

Looks like theres alot of mixed opinions on the CS guess I'd just have to wait and see. Thanks for all the helpful input guys!
