My neighbor just gave me a bunch on Italian leather sword grips and scabbards, well sort of... Apparently his dog got a hold of the tag that was between the cushions and went to town. It occurred to me that this might be a way for others who don't have a Tandy Leather outlet nearby to get free pieces of good sized leather as I see these kinds of things out on the curb every now and again. The cushion leather is pretty thin and might be good for grips while the rest is thicker and might make good scabbard coverings. It's likely treated with something to protect from staining so I'll have to clean it off with something if I want to change the color. Upholstery shops could be another good source for scraps. I got a nice piece of brown leather from a local shop that the guy just gave me when I told him what I was going to use it for.

Hmm...that is most likely chrome-tanned leather...I am not sure but I had heard that you shouldn't use it. Maybe it was the Gaffer that said so?
Yup, but it dealt with scabbards...anyways, if you can use that, you might have to setup a business...that's got a lot of good leather on it!
I'd use it to make a leather cloak myself or maybe a ranger coat like Aragorn's. Ok, I'm just dreamin now...but I'm interested to see what you do with it; keep us posted.

Ooh, Ebon, now that you mention it that does sound familiar. Something about vegetable tanned leather being the one to use rather than chrome tanned. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to look more into it. Thanks Sparky

Let me know your experiences with those....I have many friends with expensive leather couches.
Not many of them have dogs though.
I do.
Hmmm.

I must admit.....I once bought a beat-up leather couch from goodwill just to rogue the leather from it. I used mine to face shields with. because like Ebon said, I didn't want to take a chance with it being chrome tanned.

Thanks Sam hammar, just train you dog to attack couches and then ask you friends to dog-sit for a couple hours. You could get a lot of couches that way (and possibly loose a lot of friends) Hi Avery, so what's the scoop on chrome tanned? I've looked around the net and so far all I can find is that chrome tanned leather doesn't take up water like veg tanned does so if you do grips and scabbard covering wet to let them shrink around the wood it won't work well. So far I've always done grips dry so if that's the only downside it won't be a problem for me. Anyone know?

That was the only real problem I had with it....It woudn't shrink well and I ended up having to do a grip over with other leather. But with that much free leather, I found plenty of other uses.

Thanks for the info avery I discovered that it does shrink if heated though. That may be useful.
