I'm gonna try to make a wooden axe that has the right weight. I have seen rubber training axes made although I can't remember where I seen it. There was a stand at a local medieval event many years ago. They were selling rubber axes, knives, daggers, swords, etc.

Sounds very cool Avery Though having never had any desire to go camping, if I can make it I'd likely just opt for a cheap hotel. It would be great if we could organize a few get togethers a year at different places to give people a chance to meet and spend a couple days doing sword-related stuff. Long sword sparring anyone?

Avery, I was going to ask 'where at in NC' but you just said an hour north of Charlotte...are you guys gonna spare in period getup?
I mean, cuz if you were...well, I wouldn't want to be the only guy in modern streetwear, you know? Either way, let us know- who knows who'll be able to make it? I live in MD so it is feasible...esp. since my sister in law is in Raleigh so I know I could talk my wife into going.

However, if others want to dress up, I say go with it. I'm gonna try to make a wooden axe that has the right weight. I have seen rubber training axes made although I can't remember where I seen it. There was a stand at a local medieval event many years ago. They were selling rubber axes, knives, daggers, swords, etc. Yeah, I've seen those....the only thing is they're not weighted very good for throwing. This is a very cool idea, and I'm not adverse to sleeping on the ground. I'd be more worried about my swords collecting moisture in the morning. Any chance they could be stored in the house?
Late summer/fall is good, too. Will make for pleasant temperatures at night and nice, long days. ;D If Slav gets a date set-up a few weeks before-hand, I can request a weekend or so off of work and bobs-your-uncle. Would be really cool to meet up with a few of you guys, I know I'd learn a ton.

I have vacation coming up on October so I can make it there , it is only 2,720 miles from my home roughly 1 days and 17 hours drive (but I drive slow so make it 2 days ) . Can we sleep in the car in North Carolina ? (we can't in California )
Do you plan to use D guard bowie since this fight is going to be in the South ? Did D guard bowie is like icon in the south like Colt peace maker in the West ?

Man, what a totally cool idea! Love it! It would make a great movie! Call it Bloodstock... or something like that. Need a band..... How about Nugent? Got my mind going now... I'd love to see it. This sounds like a very fun idea Avery.

Thana makes a pretty good point...if I were to use a bowie against as sword, it'd definitely be a D-guard. That extra piece of metal would be very handy, especially with parries, and as its own weapon. Interesting thought. Doubt I'll be there to see it; have to remember how far Charlotte is from me, then subtract another hour...and determine if it's worthwhile or not.

The problem with a D-guard is being able to roll it in hand to throw certain ways...... Y'all think it would be worth while to make a bowie/axe combo video.....I could do it as an instructional video. Theres been alot of talk about the penatrative ability of a bowie, and I would like to dispell those myths......On the other hand, I don't want Slav to be able to study my style, so I'll have to leave alot out and not talk about specifics too much.(I'll need every advantage in this I can get,...and it'll still most likely not be enough.)

Well, if you're stuck on throwing then sure, a D-guard isn't your best option. But if you intend to keep it in-hand, a guard is certainly a convenience from any angle I can see.

Yeah, the throwing is part of the"last ditch effort to win a fight" kinda theme..... I won't throw in every round, but I'm pretty sure I'll need every advantage I can get!

Hey..every advantage you can get, when it comes to throwing.
I've always been of the opinion that a good knife thrower has perfected the methodology of disarming himself.
That being said, you're at a bit of a mis-match here. A katana was a battlefield weapon that later became a dueling weapon. Though it was secondary on the battlefield, to the bow and spear, it was still a greater reach weapon than it's closest Japanese equivalent, the tanto... (Or, for some bowies I've seen, waki)
Neither of them were noted battlefield weapons. Though the bowie, particularly the D-guard, was carried by southern soldiers, it was noted that it was more often used for camp chores than actual fighting. I've got no doubt that it was used for fighting if pressed, but by the time the bowie came into common use there was a far more effective weapon for katana range attacks, on out to the outer range of the spear.
That is, of course, the pistol.
That being said, there are circumstances where a bowie would be advantageous. Inside buildings, for instance. I'd hate to be sitting next to a guy with a bowie when I had a katana, especially when it's a trestle style table. But in most circumstances I think the cowboy/soldier would be reaching for his pistol, rather than his bowie.
Still, should be one hell of a show.
