The oil residue in my katana's saya has now hardened and turned into a white crust and is getting on the blade whats the best way to get rid of this

I had a similar problem, when i bought a sword from someone who oiled it with WAY too much oil, and not often enough, so it turned into a goo...
If you have a maintenance kit- a bit of uchiko powder+a few drops of chouji oil, use the paste to clean the blade. you only need a bit of it. (credit for James on this one, works like a miracle) You can use a blower/compressor to blow a stream of air into the saya and get rid of leftovers from this crust or whatever.
If you don't have a maintenance kit- Use alcohol 90% or more, use microfiber or other soft cloth, and just rub it off. It's a bit more messy and less effective, but works.
